Lately I have been running into a lot of old friends and acquaintances from my years as a high school coach. At several track meets this past season two starters who were working when I was a head track coach are still in the business of starting track meets. Rodney King does a lot of meets in this area now since he is retired from his regular job. He always was, and still is, a good starter. He makes young athletes feel at ease, and this cuts down on annoying false starts. What really surprised me was running into Joe Edmunds at the boys regional in Connersville. Joe and I go back to my early days as a beginning teacher in the Northeastern School System in the 60’s. It was known as Williamsburg when I taught there. Joe works mainly north of Interstate 70, so I had not seen him in the past several years. Joe, like Rodney, enjoys being with young athletes, and that makes him a good starter as well.I have already talked about some of our local starters, and as I previously stated, if other sports in Indiana were like track and cross country, you would hear a lot less complaining about officials.
