South Africa congratulates Obama

first_img7 November 2012 South African President Jacob Zuma has congratulated Barack Obama on his re-election as president of the United States of America. “We value our relations with the United States and look forward to strengthening bilateral cooperation in the years to come,” Zuma said in a statement shortly after Obama addressed the US early on Wednesday morning following confirmation of his victory at the polls. Zuma said that the US had an important role to play in Africa’s development. “South Africa is confident that the United States will continue to play a positive role in this regard,” he said. Obama beat a strong challenge from Republican Mitt Romney to win a second term at the White House. In a tweet to supporters, Obama said: “This happened because of you. Thank you,” as crowds cheered outside the Democrats’ Chicago headquarters ahead of his victory address. Obama was projected to have won several key swing states, including Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Iowa, Nevada and New Hampshire, with Romney winning only North Carolina. Florida and Virginia remained too close to call. The relentless battle for the swing states gave Obama at least 290 electoral votes, while Romney had just 201 shortly after midnight. Obama easily grabbed a host of “deep blue” states, including California, Illinois and New Jersey, while Romney prevailed in the “deep red” states of Texas, Kentucky and Georgia. While Obama supporters had already started celebrations of his re-election, Romney conceded defeat. In addition to the massive task of tackling US$1-trillion annual deficits and reducing a US$16-trillion national debt, Obama will have to deal with a divided US Congress that is likely to maintain the same partisan makeup in his second term in the White House. Business must start investing more: Ramaphosa

first_img23 June 2014For South Africa to prosper and create jobs, it is crucial for the private sector to start investing more in the economy, says Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa.Speaking during a post-State of the Nation address interview with the SABC at the public broadcaster’s studios in Cape Town on Sunday, Ramaphosa said the government would do all it could to support big business by removing obstacles to doing business in the country. These included energy constraints and bureaucratic red tape, which business people had identified as hindering business development.Ramaphosa said South Africa’s energy constraints affected all role players in the economy, “and particularly business, or the private sector, that accounts for 70% of employment in our country. For as long as energy is constrained, we are not able to build the factories, to do all that we are willing to do.”In his State of the Nation Address last Tuesday, President Jacob Zuma identified the current low level of investment by the private sector as a key factor holding back the growth of the economy.“We are determined to work with the private sector to remove obstacles to investment,” Zuma said, adding: “We would like to see the private sector showing as much confidence in the economy as the public sector.”Ramaphosa said that what the President was saying was that “there has been an assertion that the private sector, at some stage, has gone on strike as far as investing further in our economy.“What he was essentially doing was making a call on the private sector, that we as government are showing enormous confidence in the economy of our country. We would like you to do likewise and invest in the economy.”Overcoming the ‘trust deficit’The Deputy President said it was important for the government and business to sit around one table on a regular basis in order to eliminate the “trust deficit” that had grown between the two.Last week, Zuma said he would soon convene the next meeting of the Presidential Business Working Group, adding that after the first meeting, held last year, “six work streams were established, and these have been discussing solutions to various obstacles to doing business in South Africa.”The issues had also been raised by company CEOs during three working sessions he had hosted in November and December, Zuma said.Ramaphosa said these meetings needed to continue, as one could never have enough engagements. “Relationships between people, organisations and countries are by their very nature fluid. They are not static, they are never written in stone.“So people need to meet continuously to renew their relationships, to look at agreements that they have arrived at to see whether those are still relevant, given the changing environment in which we live.“When the President says he wants to have a further meeting, we should not pour cold water on that initiative. We should see it as continued progress, because what it means is that people are engaging.”Source: SAnews.gov.zalast_img read more

Proteas spend Mandela Day with children

first_img20 July 2015The Proteas, South Africa’s national cricket team currently on tour in Bangladesh, teamed up with the International Children’s Palliative Care Network (ICPCN) to spread some Madiba Magic among young cricket fans in Chittagong. The youngsters, all born with life-limiting conditions, were treated to a once-in-a- lifetime opportunity of spending the afternoon with the Proteas in celebration of Nelson Mandela International Day, at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Cricket Stadium. The 18 children were accompanied by their parents and spent a day of fun with the team. The children are patients at the Paediatric Oncology Centre at Chittagong Medical College Hospital. They watched the team train, and received ICPCN wristbands and NOW campaign cricket bats as they eagerly waited to meet the players.Mandela Day is a day set aside annually to celebrate Mandela’s life and legacy, and all South Africans and citizens of the world are encouraged to make acts of kindness to help change the world for the better.Proteas assistant coach Adrian Birrell, one of the drivers of team culture, said humility and compassion – keys traits of the late leader – were the founding qualities by which the Proteas lived.“We knew that back home most South Africans would be spending 67 minutes doing good deeds in Nelson Mandela’s memory and we felt we wanted to share that Madiba legacy with the people of Chittagong,” he said. “The Proteas are all about higher purpose and we felt it would be a great opportunity to give back to the community and to contribute towards a worthwhile cause.”A tour could get tedious between moving from the hotel, training and playing, Birrell explained, so it was nice to do something fun and different. “These children are suffering from terminal illness; it’s tragic for them and their families. It was humbling to see the excitement and smiles on their faces.“Hopefully that makes some kind of difference to their lives. Hopefully they forgot about their plight in these few minutes that they were with us signing autographs and interacting with the players.“I think the most important thing for us was to bring smiles to their faces by spreading some Madiba magic to those less fortunate than us. We tried to share a little bit of what the Proteas stood for and gave an unconditional act of kindness. I think it’s important for all South Africans to give where we can, if we can all do a little bit it can go a long way.”Watch the Proteas with the children in Chittagong:Speaking of the work the network does, media and marketing officer, Lorne Sithole, said: “The ICPCN’s mission is to achieve the best quality of life and care for children and young people with life-limiting conditions, a critical necessity especially in an impoverished country like Bangladesh. It is a dream come true for many of the children here from the Chittagong Medical Hospital.“Bangladesh is one of the poorest countries in the world and access to medical care, information and resources is limited. We hope this day will at least have given these brave children something to smile about.”The Proteas’ two-Test series against Bangladesh starts tomorrow. They had mixed success in the limited overs portion of their tour, winning the T20 series 2-0 but losing the One Day Internationals 2-1 to the home team.Source: News24Wirelast_img read more

Weekly Wrapup: The Web in 5 Years, Hulu’s Plans, Google Wave Use Cases, And More…

first_imgTags:#Features#web#Weekly Wrap-ups Mobile Web’s Explosive Growth Mobile ad firm AdMob has revealed the dramatic changes the mobile industry has seen in their latest Mobile Metrics Report. It was only a year ago that the Motorola RAZR scored as the number one phone in America. One year later and half of the top ten are touchscreen devices, six include Wi-Fi capabilities, and six have mobile application stores. And as you would expect, this new crop of super-powered phones are making heavy use of the mobile web. Why Aren’t VCs Backing Augmented Reality? Some people believe that Augmented Reality (AR), the class of technologies that place images or data on top of other views of the physical world, could be the web browser of the future. AR has rocketed out of the research labs and is catching mass market interest fast – e.g. mobile phones displaying restaurant reviews when you look through your phone’s camera. Why then are VCs not investing more in Augmented Reality? Here are three reasons why we think investment in this sector has been slow so far.Facebook Announces Roadmap for Developers This week Facebook published a developer roadmap outlining upcoming relevant changes and a rough timeline for each. In an interview with Graham, ReadWriteWeb learned that the entrepreneur-turned-investor issued a “Request for Startups” (RFS) asking for ideas from companies utilizing Twitter and Justin.tv’s live video API. Groups who are accepted to Y-Combinator and fall under these categories will be given “priority access” to Twitter and Justin.tv. It was announced at the end of May, released as a ‘Preview’ product shortly after and 100,000 more invites were made available at the end of September. Early users reported mixed feelings. But one month after Google Wave was opened to tens of thousands of people, how are people using it now? What use cases are being discovered? We started this series by looking at the education sector. Web TrendsGoogle’s Eric Schmidt on What the Web Will Look Like in 5 Years Google CEO Eric Schmidt envisions a radically changed internet five years from now: dominated by Chinese-language and social media content, delivered over super-fast bandwidth in real time. Figuring out how to rank real-time social content is “the great challenge of the age,” Schmidt said in an interview in front of thousands of CIOs and IT Directors at last week’s Gartner Symposium/ITxpo Orlando 2009. Or does the company have other plans? Google Launches Music Search: Partners with MySpace, Lala, Gracenote and OthersThis week Google announced the launch of Google Music.
