By John BurtonThe lineup is set for the Aug. 13 special primary to replace the late U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg with four high-profile Democrats in the running. The list is leaner on the Republican side. It’s a race that one Two-River state senator opted to sit out.State Sen. Joseph M. Kyrillos, Middletown, a more than two-decade Republican veteran of the Senate and longtime party standard-bearer, was on just about everyone’s short list of either being chosen by Republican Gov. Chris Christie to hold the U.S. Senate seat for the interim, and/or to seek the office for the remaining 13 months of Lautenberg’s term. The only Monmouth County candidate for the seat is U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone Jr., Long Branch, a 25-year Democratic veteran of the House who represents the 6th District.Kyrillos, 53, has opted out of running and this week discussed his decision with The Two River Times™.“I just ran my race and had an election about seven months ago,” Kyrillos said of being his party’s unsuccessful candidate against Sen. Robert Menendez, D-NJ. “It was great, I enjoyed every minute of it,” he said while acknowledging he ran into some insurmountable obstacles, which really made his 2012 run – always a long shot – that much more arduous. While deciding whether to run in 2011, he said, he “assumed three things. I assumed the national election would be a close one,” with Mitt Romney’s run for president offering some coattails. That however, turned out to not be the case with President Barack Obama winning the state by an even larger margin than he did in 2008.Another factor was Kyrillos’ hope that some of the allegations that had come out post-2012 election contending Menendez had ethical lapses, would have made their way into the headlines prior to voters going to the polls, he said.Third, and most notably – at least for Monmouth and Ocean counties, the home of Kyrillos’ base of support – was Super Storm Sandy striking so close to the general election. “It killed us in our base,” he said.“Mostly,” he said, “it’s a very tough state,” to run for statewide office under the Republican banner, as the electorate continues to skew blue, returning Democrats to those offices.New Jersey voters haven’t sent a Republican to the Senate since Clifford P. Case.“I’m really mindful of the difficulty of a Republican running in New Jersey in federal (election) years – especially in presidential years,” he said. With the rapidly approaching primary and looming special election on Wednesday, Oct. 16 – less than three weeks before the general election – the tightly compressed race would have been daunting to mount for anyone, Kyrillos said.Since he ran last year, that would have meant running for the statewide office again less than a year later and during a two-month period, and again in 2014 for a full six-year term; an exhausting – and expensive – prospect, even for a veteran pol.Paul Tsongas, the late senator from Massachusetts and presidential candidate, said money is the mother’s milk of American politics. It is what nurtures and nourishes political campaigns.Kyrillos said he raised about $5.5 million for his Senate run last year. It was a pretty good amount for a challenger but not nearly enough for candidates who have to have to buy advertising time in the expensive New York and Philadelphia markets to get their message out to Garden State voters, Kyrillos said.“You really need around 10 to 20 (million dollars)” to run an effective, winning Senate campaign, he said.Last year there were 33 Senate seats, 17 gubernatorial races, plus the full 435-member House with the presidency topping the ticket. “That’s a lot of competition for available dollars,” he said.Democrats voting in the Aug. 13 primary, will choose from four candidates: Pallone, against whom Kyrillos had run unsuccessfully in 1992; Rep. Rush Holt, D-12th, who has represented his district for 15 years; state Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver, who represents Essex County; and Newark Mayor Cory Booker.Republicans will choose from two candidates in the primary: Steve Lonegan, former mayor of the Bergen County community of Bogota, who unsuccessfully sought the GOP nomination in 2005 and 2009; Dr. Alieta Eck, a Piscataway physician.Christie last week tapped Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa to service in the Senate until the special election. He was sworn in Monday, June 10.With this roster, Kyrillos called Booker the “presumptive incumbent for all practical purposes,” saying the Newark mayor had marquee name value and fundraising ability and apparatus in place. But it’s still early in the process. “This year will be even still more unpredictable,” because it’s an “off-off year election” Kyrillos said. “The turnout may be even smaller and it may be a surprise result.”Having just fought back an unusual challenge for his Senate seat during the June 4 primary election, Kyrillos plans on campaigning for Christie – the two have a strong personal friendship that dates back to their college days – and for other candidates around the state.
Michael Ferry, right, being taken into court in Donegal Town in December.FORMER Justice Minister Alan Shatter had asked for a new report into the Micheal Ferry abuse scandal before he left office, Donegal Daily has learned.New Minister Frances Fitzgerald will review the report when she gets it, her spokesman has confirmed. It has led to hopes among Ferry’s victims that they may finally found out more about the scandal. The Minister confirmed to Deputy Pearse Doherty that Mr Shatter had asked for a report on the case just weeks ago following a decision by Minister Fitzgerald – then as Children’s Minister – to release the contents of a damning HSE review of the case to the victims and their families.Michael Ferry is serving 14 years in prison for abusing young boys in the grounds of a school building where he worked as caretaker.Ferry was paid by Colaiste Cholmcille for his work at the former Ardscoil Mhuire building in Gaoth Dobhair right up until 2010 – nine years after Ferry pleaded guilty to sexually abusing a boy in the grounds of the school. His continued work there horrified the nation when Ferry was convicted again two years ago of abusing more boys, some of them after his 2002 conviction. At the time Minister Shatter described the affair as “outrageous” and ordered a Garda investigation as well as a separate ministerial report.Deputy Doherty told Donegal Daily that Deputy Shatter had assured him before his resignation that he was looking again at the affair.“To be fair to him, he did promise to ask for a report from his officials at the Department of Justice,” said Deputy Doherty.“Minister Fitzgerald has confirmed this to me and she is now awaiting that report. She said a decision on its publication or release to victims would be taken once she has seen it. Obviously I believe that like the HSE report, this new report should be given to victims.”The minister’s spokesman said: “A further report had been sought from the Garda authorities by the Minister’s predecessor on any issues arising from the case, following the decision not to prosecute, and this material will be considered by Minister Fitzgerald upon its receipt. It is not possible to make any further comment pending that.”REVEALED: JUSTICE MINISTER AWAITING NEW REPORT ON FERRY ABUSE SCANDAL was last modified: May 17th, 2014 by John2Share this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:abuse scandalArdscoil MhuireGaoth DobhairMichael Ferry

13 May 2010About 90% of the more than three-million tickets made available for the 2010 Fifa World Cup™ have been sold, the Local Organizing Committee says.“I have no doubt that come kick off all the matches will be sold out,” Local Organising Committee CEO Danny Jordaan said at a press conference in Pretoria to mark one month before kick-off on Tuesday. In 2006, Germany sold around 92% of the total number of tickets available, and with just 30 days left before the start of this year’s World Cup, it is likely that South Africa may also end up recording a similar figure.Jordaan said most South Africans had used banking group FNB and over-the-counter sales to purchase their tickets. “FNB and the over the counter system really proved to be popular among South Africans,” he said.World Cup firstFifa introduced the over the counter sales model, a first in the history of the World Cup tournament, after it had emerged that the majority of South Africans were struggling to get tickets via internet applications and other ways initially in place. Most of the high profile matches including the opening match, semi finals and the final have been sold out.Hosts South Africa lead the ticket sales with more than 1.1-million tickets purchased in the country. SA is followed by the United States, then the UK, with Australia in fourth place.Source: BuaNews
Johannesburg, Wednesday 18 November 2015 – Brand South Africa, in partnership with the Business Report, today released the results of South Africa’s performance in the 2015 Anholt Nation Brand Index.South Africa ranks 38 of 50 countries assessed in this index.Although South Africa has dropped one place – from 37 in 2014 to 38 in 2015 – the country’s overall reputation score has improved 0.17 points from 2014. In addition, South Africa has improved on the pillars of people and tourism and held steady on the pillars of exports and governance.Reflecting on South Africa’s performance in the Nation Brand Index, CEO Kingsley Makhubela said, “South Africans can be proud of our country’s performance in a range of indices in the past year. The Global Competitiveness Index produced by the World Economic Forum ranks us 49 amongst 140 countries and number 2 in Africa. The Mo Ibrahim Index on African Governance places us at number 4 amongst 54 countries on the continent and now, the Nation Brand Index places us at number 38 of 50 countries. A country’s reputation is collectively built by each citizen and Brand South Africa salutes you for your efforts to build a globally competitive country with a positive reputation.”“There is however work to be done to improve in certain areas of our competitiveness and the National Development Plan must guide national efforts to achieve this. Improvements will impact positively on the reputation of and perceptions about South Africa. Brand South Africa urges all citizens to become part of this endevour.”“In addition and despite South Africa’s drop in the area of investment and immigration according to the Nation Brand Index, South Africa registered an FDI inflow of US$3.31 billion between January 2015 to July 2015 which resulted in the creation of 5 037 jobs. According to the Department of Trade and Industry, FDI is being attracted into knowledge intensive sectors like: software and information technology services; business services; financial services communications; and industrial machinery, equipment and tools. This bodes well for the South African economy. It is also significant to recognise that despite global FDI falling by 16% in 2014, South Africa was able to attract over R140 billion in the 2013/14 financial year. This is almost double the amount of FDI in 2012.”The Nation Brand Index recognises amongst South Africa’s strengths, sports – particularly football, pristine landscape, and game reserves. Participants in the survey also indicated that the citizens of South Africa are amongst our biggest attribute being described as, amongst others, desirable friends, good employees, hardworking and skilful. The Nation Brand Index is the result of 20,342 interviews in 20 countries.Notes to the EditorAbout the Nation Brand IndexThe NBI measures the reputation of the Nation Brand on six elements, being: Governance; Exports; Tourism; People; Culture; Investment & Immigration. Through a series of sub-indicators the nation’s performance on each pillar is assessed through the study. Importantly the range of indicators tested through the research clearly illustrates the fact the nation brand’s reputation is shaped by anything from perceptions of people and culture, to the quality of exports and the governance profile of the country. This means that the ‘making’ of the nation’s global reputation depends on perceptions created by actions taken in multiple sectors spanning government, business, civil-society, and generally speaking the people of the country. The NBI MethodologyThe 2015 NBISM survey has been conducted in 20 major developed and developing countries that play important and diverse roles in international relations, trade and the flow of business, cultural and tourism activities. Given the increasing global role played by developing countries, the survey strives to represent regional balance as well as balance between high-income and middle-income countries. The core 20 panel countries are:• Western Europe/North America: The U.S., Canada, the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Sweden• Central and Eastern Europe: Russia, Poland, Turkey• Asia-Pacific: Japan, China, India, South Korea, Australia• Latin America: Argentina, Brazil, Mexico• Middle East/Africa: Egypt, South AfricaIn all, 20,342 interviews have been conducted with at least 1,000 interviews per country for the 2015 NBISM survey. Adults age 18 or over who are online are interviewed in each country. Using the most up-to-date online population parameters, the achieved sample in each country has been weighted to reflect key demographic characteristics such as age, gender, and education of the 2015 online population in that country. Additionally, in the U.S, the UK, South Africa, India, and Brazil, race/ethnicity has been used for sample balancing. The report reflects the views and opinions of online populations in these 20 countries – citizens who are connected to the world. Fieldwork was conducted from July 9th to July 27th, 2015.NBISM measures the image of 50 nations. In each panel country the list of 50 nations is randomly assigned to respondents, each of whom (except Egypt) rates 25 nations, resulting in each nation getting approximately 500 ratings per panel country. In Egypt, where respondents are not as familiar and experienced with online surveys, survey length is reduced, resulting in each nation getting approximately 200 ratings.About Brand South AfricaBrand South Africa is the official marketing agency of South Africa, with a mandate to build the country’s brand reputation, in order to improve its global competitiveness. Elon Musk’s Tesla Motors will open a South African office this month, which will be managed by Evan Rice, the chief executive of GreenCape, an organisation formed to help develop the market for renewable energy in Western Cape.(Image: Tesla Powerwall)Brand South Africa reporterThe South African Tesla operation will start off with only one employee. But Rice told the htxt website that “if we can find some solid business cases and get them going, we will be expanding”, hinting at further announcements for the company’s presence in South Africa and the rest of the continent later in 2016.Rice says the company’s priority in South Africa will be to develop a market for Tesla’s industrial-scale battery pack, called the Powerwall. It was introduced to the world in 2015 by Musk. At the launch, Musk called the revolutionary device “the most suitable and cost-effective way to manage energy grids and supplement renewable energy sources for both industrial and home markets”.The Tesla Powerwall is a home battery system charged with solar energy that can provide power after sunset. The system can be plugged into the power grid, connected to buildings or paired with solar panels. Utilities can use them to operate their grids more smoothly and avoid having to build more expensive power plants that create pollution.Powerwall batteries are currently manufactured in Nevada, in the US. Tesla already has distribution deals in place to sell Powerwall products in South Africa through several renewable energy companies, including Dako Power and Rubicon, according to Rice.Rice also says the company, together with GreenCape, has spoken to municipal energy providers about feed-in tariffs which would allow customers to sell energy back to the grid. This would help to encourage private capital to invest in the systems, he says.“At the moment, we’re seeing the majority of solar going into shopping malls or retail parks where all the energy produced can be used on site,” Rice explains. “If you could sell some back to the grid it would make (investing in storage) a much more attractive business case and help to leverage private capital.”While Tesla has no plans to bring the group’s electric vehicles here, the anticipated success of the Powerwall home battery system in South Africa – which is no stranger to electricity constraints – might push forward plans to introduce the hugely popular vehicle in the country.Tesla Motors was founded in 2003 by Musk and a group of Silicon Valley engineers looking to improve the performance and cut the costs of electric motors. The defining aspect of the Tesla vehicles and the Powerwall is the principles of the AC induction motor patented in 1888 by inventor Nikola Tesla. The resulting Tesla Roadster not only set a new standard for non-emission vehicles, but was also the fastest and most cost-effective electric car in the world.Tesla Motors turned its first profit in 2013, according to Forbes magazine, giving Musk a net worth of $13-billion (R209.4bn), while making Tesla a household name in the United States.Born in 1971, Musk grew up in Johannesburg and Pretoria and immigrated to Canada when he finished high school. He sold his first startup, a company that provided maps and business directories, to Compaq Computer for $22-million. He went on to co-create the PayPal online payment system, which he later sold to eBay for $250m. This, in turn, financed Musk’s interests in alternative energy and space technology. His two business focuses now are Tesla and SpaceX, the private space exploration company dedicated to developing affordable and advanced space travel and research.Described by biographer Ashlee Vance as a “possessed genius on the grandest quest anyone has ever concocted, (Musk) is no less a (chief executive) chasing riches than a general marshalling troops to secure victory. Where Mark Zuckerberg wants to help you share baby photos, Musk wants to save the human race from self-imposed or accidental annihilation.”Source: AFKInsider, Tesla Motors, Elon Musk websiteWould you like to use this article in your publication or on your website?
