US Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced travel time on Amtrak’s Vermonter line will be cut by nearly 30 minutes through a $72.8 million grant to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation. The project will restore a rail line, improving 50 miles of track and infrastructure on a direct route from Springfield to East Northfield, MA, along the Connecticut River Valley. ‘Thanks to President Obama’s commitment to create jobs and strengthen our manufacturing sector, these dollars are delivering more than 200 new jobs along with the purchase of 50 miles of American-made steel rails,’ said Secretary Ray LaHood. ‘Coupled with previous federal investments along the Vermonter line, these improvements will bring almost a one hour reduction in travel time for passengers traveling in Vermont and Massachusetts.’ With more than a 16 percent ridership increase in 2010, the Vermonter line operates between St. Albans, VT and Washington, DC. The Massachusetts portion of the rail line dates back to the mid-1800’s. After track conditions deteriorated in the 1980’s, Amtrak service was shifted to a rail line farther east. Work to restore the original passenger route on Pan Am Southern Railway’s Connecticut River mainline also includes construction of two new stations in Greenfield and Northampton, MA. Progress on the Vermonter service began last year with a $50 million grant to the Vermont Agency of Transportation, improving 190 miles of track between St. Albans and Vernon, shaving 30 minutes off of travel time within Vermont. Long-term, the investments in Vermont and Massachusetts will also increase reliability and for future expansion of service to Montreal, Quebec. Until September, however the trip will require Vermonters to take an Amtrak bus, as work continues to upgrade the line.Source: US DOT. 7.1.2011
Solicitor General Jose Calida. CNN He then reiterated his request for anoral argument to defend the OSG position that the network’s franchise must benullified due to several violations. Calida added that what the OSG want isto stop the discussion while the case is pending in court. In a consolidated reply to the SupremeCourt, Solicitor General Jose Calida said ABS-CBN’s claim that a gag order willimpair the people’s right to information is “overly sweeping if not altogetherexaggeration.” The SC did not make any action onCalida’s quo warranto petition as well as in the gag order motion against thenetwork earlier this week and the high court will tackle the cases during itsen banc session on March 10./PN He added: “It is respectfullysubmitted that the Honorable Court’s plenary power embodied in the Constitutionclearly gives statutory basis to the Honorable Court’s jurisdiction to hear thepresent quo warranto petition.” MANILA – The Office of the SolicitorGeneral (OSG) insisted there was a need to issue a gag order against partiesfrom discussing in public the quo warranto case filed against televisionnetwork ABS-CBN. “The issues raised before thisHonorable Court do not present political but legal questions which are withinits province to resolve,” the Solicitor General said. In his quo warranto petition to thehigh court, Calida said the OSG uncovered numerous abuses and violations ofABS-CBN Corp. and ABS-CBN Convergence of its legislative franchise. Calida also maintained that the quowarranto is allowed under the Rules of Civil Procedure in order to obtain ajudicial declaration of the supposed violation committed by the network. Calida also said the network violatedthe constitutional provision against foreign ownership of media entities whenit issued the Philippine Depository Receipts to foreigners. “The exercise of such right is notabsolute for it may be so regulated that it shall not be injurious to the equalenjoyment of others having equal rights, nor injurious to the rights of thecommunity or society,” Calida said.
The No. 9 University of Wisconsin men’s basketball team took care of business against Chicago State University at home Thursday in an effort that was anything but business as usual.Senior leader Nigel Hayes went 1-8 from the floor and finished with three points behind an 11 point, 5-7 field goal percentage from sophomore Kahlil Iverson. The beginning of the first half started slow, but freshman standout D’Mitrik Trice and the Badgers put up a 17-3 run and take an early 19-11 lead. As far as the score, it wouldn’t only get better for UW going forward as the bench racked up a massive 36 points on the game in the 18 point win.Iverson brought the ship home to port for the Badgers in the second half, recording four dunks down the stretch and creating enough of a buffer to close out the home win. Head coach Greg Gard said in the post game press conference that he was pleased with the improvements from Tuesday’s loss, but stressed the need to cut down on turnovers going forward. While the victory Thursday was needed just to get another win in the win column, the matchup served more as a chance for Wisconsin to prove to itself that it can return to a top 10 level after a disheartening defeat at Creighton University earlier this week. The Badgers will now look to stay on the winning end of things as they travel to the Maui Invitational next week for a matchup with Tennessee University Monday.Men’s basketball: Bench play sparks No. 9 Wisconsin to victory over Chicago StateThe beginnings of Thursday night’s game against Chicago State University and the effort against Creighton Tuesday night were all too Read…Wisconsin offensive player of the game: Kahlil IversonIverson’s performance can’t be more overstated when you talk about the depth of this Wisconsin team. The sophomore guard’s second half impact speak volumes to how far Gard can reach into his bench for points when the rest of the team is tired.Iverson also serves as an enormous spark plug for a team that, despite plenty of experience, has very few exciting players. The athletic youngster scores most of his points in the forms of dunks and those dunks are normally what excites the team most and ends up on the highlight reels. Iverson’s display of offense on Thursday will help the team in more ways than one as they move into a brutal non-conference schedule.Wisconsin defensive player of the game: Charlie Thomas IVIverson’s roommate and best friend, Charlie Thomas, also made a name for himself against Chicago State, recording a team-high seven rebounds and a dominant display on the defensive end. Opposing coaches and players have been blown away from Thomas’ size on the inside this season and his extra confidence this season should provide a huge presence on the blocks.Thomas was pretty limited last season after the coaching switch to Gard early on, but has reamerged in the lineup over the last few games. The center’s 15 minutes of action Thursday was limited, but felt as Chicago State only 10 points in the paint and were very limited around Thomas. With Thomas more aggressive down low, Ethan Happ and Hayes should have more room to work and will know they have a safety blanket on the boards if they put up a bad shot.Chicago State player of the game: Fred Sims JrThere weren’t many bright spots for Chicago State in Madison, but Fred Sims Jr. and his team high 26 points and six threes were enough to give the Cougars something to be proud of. Sims was definitely the team leader out on the floor, controlling possession and scoring more than half his team’s points.Wisconsin now travels to Maui at will face Tennessee Monday at 1:30 p.m. CT and will air on ESPN2.

ANAHEIM — The severity of Stephen Piscotty’s knee injury won’t be known until at least Monday, but there was a small amount of optimism as the A’s prepared to play the Los Angeles Angels in the final game of their four-game series on Sunday at Angel Stadium.Piscotty left the 4-0 win on Saturday night after spraining the knee while sliding into second base in the sixth inning. 20 July 2015The Proteas, South Africa’s national cricket team currently on tour in Bangladesh, teamed up with the International Children’s Palliative Care Network (ICPCN) to spread some Madiba Magic among young cricket fans in Chittagong. The youngsters, all born with life-limiting conditions, were treated to a once-in-a- lifetime opportunity of spending the afternoon with the Proteas in celebration of Nelson Mandela International Day, at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Cricket Stadium. The 18 children were accompanied by their parents and spent a day of fun with the team. The children are patients at the Paediatric Oncology Centre at Chittagong Medical College Hospital. They watched the team train, and received ICPCN wristbands and NOW campaign cricket bats as they eagerly waited to meet the players.Mandela Day is a day set aside annually to celebrate Mandela’s life and legacy, and all South Africans and citizens of the world are encouraged to make acts of kindness to help change the world for the better.Proteas assistant coach Adrian Birrell, one of the drivers of team culture, said humility and compassion – keys traits of the late leader – were the founding qualities by which the Proteas lived.“We knew that back home most South Africans would be spending 67 minutes doing good deeds in Nelson Mandela’s memory and we felt we wanted to share that Madiba legacy with the people of Chittagong,” he said. “The Proteas are all about higher purpose and we felt it would be a great opportunity to give back to the community and to contribute towards a worthwhile cause.”A tour could get tedious between moving from the hotel, training and playing, Birrell explained, so it was nice to do something fun and different. “These children are suffering from terminal illness; it’s tragic for them and their families. It was humbling to see the excitement and smiles on their faces.“Hopefully that makes some kind of difference to their lives. Hopefully they forgot about their plight in these few minutes that they were with us signing autographs and interacting with the players.“I think the most important thing for us was to bring smiles to their faces by spreading some Madiba magic to those less fortunate than us. We tried to share a little bit of what the Proteas stood for and gave an unconditional act of kindness. I think it’s important for all South Africans to give where we can, if we can all do a little bit it can go a long way.”Watch the Proteas with the children in Chittagong:Speaking of the work the network does, media and marketing officer, Lorne Sithole, said: “The ICPCN’s mission is to achieve the best quality of life and care for children and young people with life-limiting conditions, a critical necessity especially in an impoverished country like Bangladesh. It is a dream come true for many of the children here from the Chittagong Medical Hospital.“Bangladesh is one of the poorest countries in the world and access to medical care, information and resources is limited. We hope this day will at least have given these brave children something to smile about.”The Proteas’ two-Test series against Bangladesh starts tomorrow. They had mixed success in the limited overs portion of their tour, winning the T20 series 2-0 but losing the One Day Internationals 2-1 to the home team.Source: News24Wire
