Doubledown Unable to Sell Magazine Assets

first_imgAt an auction held late last week in U.S. bankruptcy court in New York, Doubledown Media, a publisher of magazines aimed at the Wall Street elite that went out of business in February, did not receive any “acceptable” bids for its remaining magazine assets, including subscriber lists.“One bidder made an offer but it was not acceptable to the trustee,” Andrea Fisher, a senior attorney with Squire Sanders & Dempsey—the firm representing Doubledown’s trustee—told FOLIO:. “The trustee will continue to entertain offers for the assets. We’ve received some inquires and the hope is that the assets sell, which will provide a distribution to [Doubledown’s] creditors.”According to the auction notice, the minimum bid for Doubledown’s Dealmaker was $100,000. For Corporate Leader and Trader magazines the lowest acceptable bid was $50,000. The minimum bid for Cigar Report was $25,000. Corporate Air, meanwhile, carried a minimum bid of $55,000. Doubledown previously received an offer from a company called Private Air Media—which is headed by the magazine’s founder Dee Dee Morrison—and Knight Images Inc., for $50,000.The minimum bid for all five titles was $300,000, or the aggregate amount of the highest bids for each property plus $20,000, the notice said.A Once-Rising Publisher Hits BottomCiting “unprecedented times,” Doubledown went out of business in February and filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy liquidation not long after. “The combination of the media depression, the Wall Street implosion and the credit slowdown were collectively too much for our company—probably any company in our shoes—to overcome,” president Randall Lane wrote in an e-mail to staffers at the time.According to court documents obtained by FOLIO: this spring, more than 350 claims totaling $4 million have been made against Doubledown, including those from a group of ex-employees, investors, three printers, vendors, designers, writers, lawyers and more. Nearly half of Doubledown’s assets include $1,013,520.43 in accounts receivable—money Doubledown has yet to be paid.In terms of the bankruptcy proceedings, the sale hearing has been adjourned until October 6, Fisher said.last_img read more

Childcare Important to Readiness Navy Marine Leaders

first_img ADC AUTHOR Providing affordable childcare is becoming a “conundrum” for the military in some areas but is crucial to readiness and retention, Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy Russell Smith said Thursday.“A lot of people have tried to bin this and call it a woman’s issue. It’s not,” Smith said, according to USNI News. “We have single fathers, single mothers, dual-income, dual-working couples. It’s a family issue.”He spoke alongside Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps Ronald Green on a panel at the Center for Strategic and International Studies hosted by the U.S. Naval Institute.Green agreed and noted a greater percentage of service members have children than when he and Smith first enlisted. But when appropriations are tight, the services are forced to focus on other issues, Green said.“You’re going to put money toward being ready and being lethal,” Green said. “When you have to take funds from other places, it normally comes from infrastructure sustainment, research and development, the programs that support families. Because we must be prepared to fight. We must do that.”U.S. Air Force photo by Airman 1st Class Crystal A. Jenkinslast_img read more

State Rep Dave Robertson His Colleagues Help Tewksbury Take Official Possession Of

first_imgBOSTON, MA — Below is a recent press release from State Representative Dave Robertson’s office:August 2nd, 1967 was the beginning of a long story between Tewksbury, the State, and a piece of land bounded by Livingston Street and forever deeded for recreational purposes. Transferred under Act 497, the Now, 53 years later, the parks, fields, and trails known as Saunders Field are officially part of the town of Tewksbury thanks to the work of the state delegation and town.“As a child I played, or tried to play, baseball on those fields. I watched the 4th of July there, rode my bike from the Middle School to the recreational department, and even attended the haunted house,” said Representative Dave Robertson (D-Tewksbury) upon the transfer of the deed to the town. “The entire time I had no idea that it was not officially town land until I was older, which left me perplexed. Because of this it was a special honor to work with Senator Finegold and Nguyen on getting this issue wrapped up and securing Livingston permanently for the town.”“Transferring the Livingston Street Fields back to the Town of Tewksbury was one of my top priorities upon coming into office in January,” added Senator Barry Finegold (D-Andover). “Working together with Representatives Nguyen and Robertson, we were able to resolve a decades-old issue in a matter of months. These 35 acres are invaluable to the community, and I’m thrilled that they will now be officially owned and controlled by the town.”“I am very proud to work on behalf of the residents of Tewksbury with my colleagues,” noted Representative Tram Nguyen (D-Andover). “I am especially delighted that we were able to work together to get the deed transferred and make certain that the Livingston Street Fields that the residents of Tewksbury have long enjoyed now officially belong to the town.”The Saunders Recreational Fields, often known to locals as the Livingston Street Fields, are the crowning jewel of the Tewksbury park system. Encompassing 35 acres the land is host to tennis courts, lacrosse fields, football fields, the majority of baseball fields, and more. Recently the town and state have recently made major investments into the center, including the opening of a water park and fitness court, with state budget funding allocated to the improvement and upgrade of parking amenities for those using the unimproved lots. The fields are also utilized for large-scale community events, such as the 4th of July, and are the most frequented recreational area for the town.“This is great for the town,” said Selectman Jay Kelley. “We have great programs and opportunities, and this helps secure a future for our town. I look forward to seeing many more generations of kids growing up and playing there.”Like Wilmington Apple on Facebook. Follow Wilmington Apple on Twitter. Follow Wilmington Apple on Instagram. It’s expected to have a 6.1-inch screen and one front-facing camera. The front-facing camera, at least according to the tweeted photo, uses Samsung’s Infinity-O display, which has a hole punched out of one corner. Phones,I’m shocked — shocked! — to learn that stores are turning Labor Day into an excuse to sell stuff. Wait — no, I’m not. As much as I respect the original intent of the holiday (which became official back in 1894), to most of us, it’s just a bonus day off — one that’s blissfully tacked onto a weekend. So, yeah, stores; go ahead, run your sales. I’m listening. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Labor Day doesn’t bring out bargains to compete with the likes of Black Friday (which will be here before you know it), but there are definitely some sales worth your time. For example:We’ve rounded up the best Labor Day mattress deals. We’ve also gathered the best Labor Day laptop deals at Best Buy.The 2019 Vizio P Series Quantum is back under $999.Be sure to check out Amazon’s roughly three dozen Labor Day deals on TVs and audio. Keep in mind, of course, that products may sell out at any time, even if the sale itself is still running. Note that CNET may get a share of revenue from the sale of the products featured on this page. An Echo Dot makes a fine match for any Fire edition TV, because you can use the latter to say things like, “Alexa, turn on the TV.” Right now, the 24-inch Insignia Fire TV Edition starts at just $100, while the 32-inch Toshiba Fire TV Editions is on sale for $130. Just add any Fire TV Edition to your cart, then add a third-gen Echo Dot, and presto: The latter is free. The problem with most entry-level laptops: They come with mechanical hard drives. That makes for a mighty slow Windows experience. This Lenovo model features a 128GB solid-state drive, so it should be pretty quick to boot and load software, even with its basic processor. Plus, it has a DVD-burner! That’s not something you see in many modern laptops, especially at this price. Though not technically a Labor Day sale, it’s happening during Labor Day sale season — and it’s too good not to share. The National Transportation Safety Board sent a team to investigate.Benny Layne, on whose property the truck landed, said the crossing arms had been known to malfunction often, sometimes not working when a train was approaching, sometimes coming down for no reason. Sometimes, he said, they stayed down for hours.“A guy was up here just yesterday or the day before taking a look at them,” he said.Carrie Brown, human resources manager at Buckingham Branch Railroad, which leases the stretch of track and is responsible for maintenance, said she was unaware of any problems with equipment at the crossing. There were 3 people in the truck that was straddling the track and which the train hit. BuzzFeed also closed its international office in Spain, and may hand down further layoffs to writers in the U.K. on Monday. There were also reports of layoffs affecting the BuzzFeed News art department and other parts of the newsroom. Other departments within the company are scheduled to hear about layoffs early next week.BuzzFeed announced Thursday that it was going to lay off 15% of its workforce across the company, or around 220 staffers of its total workforce of close to 1,500. A BuzzFeed spokesperson didn’t immediately respond to a question about the number of staffers laid off in the news division Friday.CEO Jonah Peretti painted the layoffs as a necessary step to “focus on content that is working” in a company-wide memo. Peretti went on to say that “the restructuring (…) will reduce our costs and improve our operating model so we can thrive and control our own destiny, without ever needing to raise funding again.”last_img read more

Flexible color displays with microfluidics

first_img The method also deviates from existing techniques of liquid crystals or organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs), which consume energy at the level of the light-emitting pixel. The technique houses a microfluidic water droplet train as a flexible, reflective display. The working principle of the system is based on a rotary liquid selector with suction-based negative pressure to drive the droplets in the intended direction and form a predetermined sign.Microchannels of the proposed device were fabricated with the flexible polymer, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), a material with properties that include transparency under visible light and permeability to air. The authors used soft lithography and bonding techniques to create PDMS-PDMS microchannels with pixel patterns ranging from 400-800 μm in diameter and 50-200 μm in height. In the device architecture, the patterns were connected via linear channels of 100-200 μm in width. Since the material is permeable to air and gas soluble, a thin Parylene layer (500 nm thick) was deposited within the microchannels to prevent the leakage and evaporation of air and water. Credit: Microsystems and Nanoengineering, doi: 10.1038/s41378-018-0018-1 To fabricate an optimized pixel size, the authors devised a relationship between the microchannel geometry and water loss in order to maintain a specific volume of dyed water as droplets advanced in the device. The device design and optimization included measurements of the minimal differential pressure required to drive dyed water droplets through the microchannels. The pressure within the microfluidic device suction system was controlled with a computer-aided valve system, and the switch control was programmed using MATLAB. In addition, the capacity for color switching and droplet control was assessed at the level of the single pixel for optimized image display. The relationship between droplet position and the time of negative pressure applied was optimized to indicate that the device could be controlled at the level of the single pixel. The schematic principles of device design and fabrication: The proposed microfluidic device made of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) polymer, using standard photolithography fabrication techniques to form pixel-patterned microchannels. The pressure inside the microfluidic device was regulated with a computer-controlled valve system composed of a solenoid valve, vacuum pump and air regulator. The switch control was programmed by MATLAB and gauge pressure controlled by the in-built regulator. Credit: Microsystems and Nanoengineering, doi: 10.1038/s41378-018-0018-1 Journal information: Nature Communications , Nature A new study published on Microsystems and Nanoengineering by Kazuhiro Kobayashi and Hiroaki Onoe details the development of a flexible and reflective multicolor display system that does not require continued energy supply for color retention. The idea aims to find futuristic applications with sustainable color displays and replace existing electronic display signs currently used for multicolor messages and images. While the concept originates from electronic paper or flexible electronics that look like print on paper (developed for smart wear), the proposed method simply relies on sequentially introduced colored water droplets and air pockets in a microfluidic device precisely fabricated on a flexible polymer to maintain stable bitmap images without energy consumption. © 2018 Phys.org This document is subject to copyright. Bhatpara bypolls marred by violence narrow escape for Madan Mitra

first_imgKolkata: Amid violent clashes between workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Trinamool Congress, with hurling of bombs and ransacking of two police vehicles, the Bhatpara Assembly constituency turned into a battleground during the by-polls on Sunday.Three persons have been injured in the violence with 18 persons being arrested so far. The by-polls were necessitated after Arjun Singh, who defected to the BJP from Trinamool Congress, resigned as Bhatpara’s MLA to contest the Lok Sabha polls. Also Read – Rs 13,000 crore investment to provide 2 lakh jobs: MamataMadan Mitra, the Trinamool candidate in Bhatpara constituency, alleged that Arjun Singh had resorted to violence as he knows that BJP will lose the by-election. The Election Commission has already sought a report on the violence. According to sources, Mitra on Sunday visited the polling booths one after another and around 12 pm while he was present at Kankinara High School, he saw that Central Force personnel were not checking the identity of the persons entering the polling booths. When he reportedly asked the jawans why was this happening, a heated exchange broke out. Also Read – Lightning kills 8, injures 16 in stateMitra alleged that BJP had arranged outsiders to cast false votes in favour of the candidates. Significantly in the Bhatpara by-election, BJP leader Arjun Singh’s son Pawan is contesting against Mitra. “Several persons could be seen entering polling premises wearing half pants. No police personnel or Central Force jawans were seen doing their duties. When I asked them about why they were not checking the identities of the voters, I was confronted,” said Mitra. Sources informed that after visiting Kankinara High School, when Mitra was on his way to another booth at Kantapukur area, several miscreants allegedly backed by the BJP hurled bombs targeting his car. But no harm was done as he immediately turned his car and left the area. Later, a Trinamool party office was allegedly set on fire by the BJP workers. As the situation worsened, the Central Force jawans lathi-charged to disperse the mob. There were attempts to reportedly snatch firearm from a jawan as well. Later, Commissioner of Police (CP), Barrackpore, Sunil Kumar Choudhary went to Kantapukur in Kankinara along with the Rapid Action Force (RAF). “We have asked for a factual report from the district administration,” Additional Chief Electoral Officer Sanjay Basu said. It is alleged that BJP has used the non-Bengali people who used to work in the jute mills that have been shut down for the past few years. Those jobless people have joined the BJP and are working as musclemen for the saffron party. In the afternoon at around 4 pm, Arjun went to the spot and alleged that Mitra was trying to create problems in the area. Condemning the violence in Kankinara, Trinamool spokesperson Derek O’Brien issued a media statement where he also alleged that the Central Forces are doing as they have been instructed by the BJP. In the statement he said: “Central forces, taking orders from BJP, mercilessly beating up citizens and Trinamool workers. Bombs hurled, open fire on citizens. BJP is resorting to high level of violence in the Bhatpara Assembly by-poll. This is dangerous for democracy. Goons of Arjun Singh have hurled bombs and even attacked the Trinamool candidate Madan Mitra.”last_img read more

Pascal Lamy Broadcaster lobby group Broadcast Netw

first_imgPascal LamyBroadcaster lobby group Broadcast Network Europe (BNE), under the banner of the Wider Spectrum Group, has called on the European Commission to provide greater long-term legal certainty that sufficient spectrum will be made available to preserve terrestrial broadcasting alongside mobile broadband. In an open letter to EC president Jean-Claude Juncker, the group called on the EC “to consider the impact of frequency allocation on European jobs and growth” and “the possible consequences for the media, creative and cultural sector, now recognised as one of Europe’s top three sectors by growth and employment”.In the letter, the group said it hoped for a consensual outcome to spectrum allocation and said there is a strong case for co-existence between terrestrial broadcasting and mobile broadband services. It expressed surprised that the EC’s reported draft communication on the Digital Single Market appears to incorporate “so few traces” of the Lamy report on the future of the UHF – 700MHz – band, which made a strong case for the continued relevance of DTT. The group said that the draft communication “appears not to make the connection between spectrum allocation and local creative and cultural jobs, media pluralism and diversity”.In an annex to its letter, the Wider Spectrum Group said that moving away from DTT would result in a loss of €38.5 billion to the European economy even before any impact on the EU’s creative industries was taken into consideration.last_img read more

Justins note America is in unprecedented territo

first_imgJustin’s note: America is in unprecedented territory. For starters, the average American is over $40,000 in debt… and that’s grown 15% over the past four years. Meanwhile, wages and the U.S. economy aren’t keeping up…Stansberry Research founder Porter Stansberry believes there is only one possible outcome: a “Debt Jubilee.”That’s why today, we’re sharing the first chapter of Porter’s book The American Jubilee. In it, he reveals the four conditions that would bring about a debt jubilee, and shows just how close we are to one taking place…By Porter Stansberry, founder, Stansberry ResearchIf you study American history, you’ll see that Debt Jubilees occur only in a unique type of extreme political environment. After all, a Jubilee is a radical measure. The government essentially steals money from one group and hands it to another. In order for this to occur, four elements must be in place… Sounds familiar, doesn’t it?We have the largest gap ever between the rich and poor…We have huge increases in violent protests about immigration and race…We have a completely ineffective government…And we have extreme animosity toward the “elites” from both the left and right.Check… check… check… and check. There’s actually a name for this type of political and social phenomenon. It’s called “populism.” And it emerges every 30 to 40 years. There must be cultural threats from those with different values or from outsiders (in other words, minority populations and immigrants). During the 1930s, just like today, the wealthy acquired a much higher-than-normal percentage of our nation’s wealth…And in both the 1930s and today, the percentage of the population who were foreign-born was higher than normal… causing animosity among the “common man.”Just like today, the economic conditions of the 1930s caused extreme income inequality.Back then, the top 10% earned 45% of all income (compared with 50% today) and owned 85% of the wealth (compared with 75% today).Even the political characters are the same…The 1930s saw a popular socialist presidential candidate just like we had in 2016. Huey Long was a former governor of Louisiana and a U.S. senator. He proposed an income cap at $1 million… a 30-hour federal work week… and 100% income taxes at the highest level.Long even established 27,000 “Share Our Wealth” clubs around the country and had a radio show that was listened to by one in five Americans. So where did this all lead?It led to America’s most dramatic Debt Jubilee to date…Regards,Porter Stansberry Founder, Stansberry ResearchJustin’s note: According to Porter, a financial revolution is already starting to take place across America. Many aren’t aware of it. But the Charlottesville riots… the burning of inner cities… the resurgence of neo-Nazi groups… and the “Black Lives Matter” protests are all signs that a Jubilee is imminent. But you still have time to protect yourself. Porter and his team of analysts have put together a presentation to explain everything. You’ll learn how the Jubilee will play out, as well as the steps you can take to survive… and prosper… once it hits. Watch it here.In Case You Missed It…On April 26, 2018, Casey Research is hosting a pivotal event… the Pot Stock Millionaire Summit. At this summit, Doug Casey, along with Crisis Investing editor Nick Giambruno, will discuss five frontier marijuana stocks set to soar as legalization gets underway. These stocks are the best ways to get in on what Forbes calls “the best ground-floor opportunity we’ve seen since the early days of the internet.” Sign up right here. Populist movements are characterized by extreme anger at the government, at the wealthy, at the establishments, and at “newcomers” and minorities. As the director of an Alabama group that tracks violence and hate crimes around the country told Newsweek in June 2017: “There has been a massive explosion of violence across the country.”I’m sure you’ve seen this yourself. The hatred and anger is like nothing I’ve witnessed in my lifetime. And it’s coming from all sides. A member of my staff went to a book reading in Baltimore by one of the most famous left-wing authors in the country. The author told the crowd that he wished he could go back in time and smother Donald Trump in his crib as a baby… or convince Trump’s mother to have an abortion. This epitomizes the political and social environment in America today. From the protests and marches… to the refusals to stand during the national anthem…From Black Lives Matter to the anti-immigration movements… to the rejuvenation of white supremacists… to the tripling of membership in the Democratic Socialists of America. It’s clear we are in the middle of an extreme “populist” period in America.Ray Dalio, one of the richest men in America, studied the political environments of the past 100 years and concluded in March 2017…The last time that it [populism] existed as a major force in the world was in the 1930s, when most countries became populist. Over the last year, it has again emerged as a major force.Look at this chart. The big spikes show when populist politicians got the most votes in America and abroad…So, what does this all mean?It proves that what we’re experiencing today is eerily similar to what happened in the 1930s… right before the biggest and most radical Debt Jubilee in American history. The economic comparison is stunning.Interest rates hit zero leading up to each of these periods…The government went into mega money-printing mode during both periods…Printing money caused the stock market and other risky assets to boom during both periods… boosting the wealth of the rich, but doing nothing for the poor… — How I almost lost $1,000,000 in 8 hours In 8 hours, I almost lost my entire $1,000,000 life savings. But by using this “secret key” technique… I saved all my money… generated a fortune… and got to retire at 42, with more security than I’d ever imagined. I’ve been quietly using it for the past 26 years to make millions. Click here and see my “secret key” in action. Recommended Link Recommended Link Why the SECOND crypto megaboom will be bigger, starting on April 30 The Bitcoin bull market will go down in history – but DON’T WORRY if you didn’t get rich. Because the second megaboom will be MUCH BIGGER. In fact, it will DWARF anything we’ve seen, minting a whole new class of crypto millionaires. Will you join them? — The government must be ineffective at providing solutions. And there must be growing anger toward the “elites.” The wealth gap must be getting dramatically bigger.last_img read more

Marijuana Workers Now Outnumber Bakers and Other Common Careers

first_img Next Article Add to Queue –shares For an industry still in its early stages, legal marijuana already has surpassed many other businesses in generating jobs.In a new report called the Marijuana Business Factbook 2017, the marijuana industry is reported to have created 165,000 to 230,000 full- and part-time jobs in the United States. According to the report, that means there are more people working in the marijuana industry than there are bakers, dental hygienists and massage therapists. The job numbers include those working at cannabis retail stores, growing facilities, marijuana-infused product companies, testing labs and ancillary businesses such as transportation and security. The numbers represent “marijuana’s rapid transformation out of the black market and into a viable economic force,” according to the report.Related: Sorry, But No You Can’t Smoke Marijuana on the Las Vegas Strip Yet.Practical mattersThe numbers also underscore one of the two practical considerations for political leaders that go beyond the decades-old “war against drugs” debate that continues at the federal level. The first is that legalized marijuana generates huge amounts of tax income for state and local governments. For example, Oregon expects to reap $200 million in adult-use marijuana taxes by 2019, and that money will go to schools, roads and law enforcement. The tax dollars generated by Colorado and other western states have politicians in other cash-starved states, such as Illinois, hoping to legalize marijuana to help balance governmental budgets. The second, which the report focused on, is job creation. Nationwide, the numbers are expected to skyrocket as California, Massachusetts and Nevada allow adult-use sales and another big state, Florida, moves forward with a regulated medical marijuana industry.Though all the new legal marijuana markets will take time to fully develop, “they have the potential to create tens of thousands of new jobs in the marijuana industry,” according to the report.Putting it in perspectiveMarijuana also has been a boon to small businesses. The majority of the jobs in marijuana are concentrated on smaller operations that only need a handful of employees.Part of the reason for this is the fact marijuana remains an illegal drug at the federal level. Because legalization has happened in a state-by-state manner, large marijuana companies employing hundreds of workers have not materialized.Related: NBA Champion John Salley Talks About the ‘Seed to Sale’ Process for Cannabis BusinessBut the jobs continue to multiply. Assuming that most marijuana industry workers do not require a college degree, here are some other, similar occupations that the marijuana industry has either surpassed or approached in the number of workers:Short-order cooks (181,600)Electronics Installers and Repairers (136,100)Library Assistants (210,700)Boilermakers (17,400)Sheet metal workers (141,000)Again, the employment numbers will only grow as legal marijuana operations go into effect in new states. Moving forward on the debate about marijuana, expect politicians to start referencing the economic benefits of cannabis over long-held objections. They may find the economic bottom line on the marijuana industry is too strong to ignore. Easy Search. Quality Finds. Your partner and digital portal for the cannabis community. If You Still Call Amazon an Online Retailer, Here’s One More Reason to Stop Amazon Image credit: Jonathan Weiss / Shutterstock.com Amazon is staggeringly good at selling things online. In just North America last year, the company generated $2.8 billion in operating income. That’s a 20 percent jump from 2016, according to a release connected to its latest earnings report. But, that’s not the complete picture. It’s still-growing international sales segment saw a $3 billion loss in operating income.Related: The Surprising Ways Amazon, Apple and Microsoft Really Make Their BillionsThank goodness for Amazon Web Services. The company’s cloud division helped propel Amazon to some of the best numbers in the company’s history. The cloud service saw $17.5 billion in net sales last year. After expenses, the division still brought in an operating income of $4.3 billion, a 39 percent increase from 2016, ensuring a total annual net income for the company of $3 billion. And this segment of Amazon’s business will continue to grow. The company announced several high-profile clients for AWS in its report, including Disney, Turner, Symantec and the NFL. Amazon also expanded AWS infrastructure in France and China, and plans to open new zones in Bahrain, Hong Kong and Sweden between now and early 2019.The company is also expanding its AI offering to include transcribing and translating services and deep-learning powered video analysis.
