Electricity tariff in Karnataka hiked by 33 paise per unit

first_imgThe electricity bills will get more expensive in Karnataka as the Karnataka Electric Regulatory Commission (KERC) has once again increased a hike of 33 paise per unit in the tariff.KERC chairman Shambhu Dayal Meena said that the five electricity supply companies (Escoms) had proposed an average hike of Rs 1.20 per unit (17.37 per cent) for all the consumer categories. But the commission allowed an increase of 33 paise per unit (4.8 per cent).Meena said that the hike has been entailed due to a 16 per cent increase in power purchase cost, 20 per cent increase in operation and management costs, 12 per cent increase in interest and finance charges, 22 per cent increase in depreciation and other pending deficits amounting to over Rs 2,000 crores. The KERC also said that it was encouraging Time of Day tariff, when the tariff will see a hike of Rs 1 per unit during peak hours, both in the morning and evening. The consumers who utilise power during non-peak hours will be eligible for a subsidy ranging from Rs 1 to Rs 2 per unit, reports The Hindu.According to reports, the commission has also reduced the number of slabs in the urban and rural areas, with an increase of 25 paise. So, a BESCOM consumer in urban areas will pay Rs 3.75 per unit instead of Rs 3.50 for the usage of 30 units. And electricity consumption beyond 30 units will attract a higher slab rate. The urban areas will have to pay an additional 5 paise as per the hiked rates of BESCOM when compared to the rural areas as Bescom consumers will pay Rs 3.65/unit for the first slab, whereas other Escoms will charge Rs 3.35/unit to Rs 3.60/unit in the rural areas.last_img read more

Union Budget 2018 AI and robotics need more funds and policy framework

first_img How artificial intelligence is transforming the stock market Close The business impact of Artifical Intelligence (AI) and robotics is rising by the day, and these frontier techs are fast reshaping industries and providing better and faster services. Industries depend on AI to mine data accumulated for years, helping unravel disruptive technological breakthroughs. IB Times caught up with home-grown robotics and AI luminaries to find out how Budget 2018 can help boost this sector.Several recent reports said India and Japan will work together to introduce AI and robotics in the defence sector. This would equip India’s armed forces with a host of robots that can work as a part of any team much like the soldiers.Besides services, industry and defence sectors, even road construction companies have started using robots. The roads ministry expects that the introduction of robots will help it to cut down on labour costs and prevent the loss of human lives. As the demand for AI and robotics is increasing across key sectors, it’s necessary that the government has a plan for the AI and Robotics industry in the upcoming budget.AI and robotics industry experts in India shared with IBTimes India their expectations from the Union Budget 2018, which Finance Minister Arun Jaitley will present on February 1. Expectations from GreyOrange: GreyOrange is a leading warehouse automation provider. They have products like warehouse automation robots and intelligent warehouse control system. Samay Kohli, the Group Chief Executive Officer, expects the following from the budget:The government could focus on formulating a comprehensive policy to support the growth of AI R&D (Research and Development) and development in India, so that it should be able to reap the benefits of AI business at a later stage as it did in the case of IT industryIn order to promote further “Make in India” policy, government could create special manufacturing parks for new technology manufacturing companies and surrounding ecosystem. Companies established under these areas could be eligible for criteria based “tax and capital” incentive. We look for Tax incentives to encourage expenditure on R&D along with easy access to working capital funding from banks at competitive rates for companies fulfilling Make in India initiative.Extension of sun set clause for section 35(2AB) to encourage investment in R&D which will help in reduction in foreign outflow on technical know-how, and also in generating forex through supply of Indian products, resulting in reduction in imported goods and increase in employment. With the government’s focus on Make in India, and considering GreyOrange manufactures in India and exports Robotics products worldwide, government could lower the import duties on raw materials (Eg. Battery, Chargers, Gearbox etc.)Since the development of technologies is a key factor in the growth and promotion of companies like GreyOrange, it is very important that a few of the very critical key components should be developed and manufactured in India. One of such critical components is “chip” development and manufacturing as it is an essential component for most technology products nowadays especially for AI products. The government should use all its possible resources to set up chip manufacturing facilities in India as it will create an essential manufacturing eco-system and will reduce substantial dependencies on other countries, specifically China, for import of such a critical component. In order to promote home-grown AI and technologies companies, the government could try to give some leverage on the eligibility criteria for including/selecting such companies in government projects.Expectations from Niki.ai: Niki.ai is an AI start-up headquartered in Bangalore. Sachin Jaiswal, the CEO, expects the following from the government:In India specifically, we believe that the government should put efforts in 2018 towards building AI-related training and awareness programmes for end-consumers and potential employees alike.Conversation platform, as an interface, resonates really well with the Indian smartphone and internet users who spend most of their time on messaging apps like Whatsapp, irrespective of the geographies and demographies they fall under. Eradicating the interface acting as a frictional element, it can definitely help push more people towards transacting online, and hence help achieve true digitisation in the country, thus having an overall positive impact on the economy. Similarly, building great AI-based platforms needs great talent. AI being one of the less explored areas in our country, there is a dearth of talent. Better infrastructure and training programmes related to AI technologies being included in mainstream courses to facilitate skill building will be a great initiative from the government. Better investment in AI and effective human-machine collaboration can help businesses boost revenues by huge margins, new reports say.Creative CommonsExpectations from CloudSEK: CloudSEK is an AI-based threat intelligence company. Rahul Sasi, the Chief Technical Officer of the company, shares his expectations:There is a popular belief among the AI communities that, those who control artificial intelligence will be the global power. Countries like US, UK and China have already started allocating funds for AI/Robotics research.Hence it is very important that our government allocates necessary funds for AI/Robotics research. Companies like Google have already decided to establish their AI research facility in China. So, it’s high time for the government to act and bring these opportunities to India as well. Trump declaration on Jerusalem isolates US at UN

first_imgUS ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley delivers a speech during a United Nations Security Council meeting on the situation in Palestine at the UN headquarters on 8 December 2017 in New York City. AFPThe United States stood alone Friday as one after another fellow UN Security Council member criticised its decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. The debate unfolded at a largely symbolic emergency meeting of the council-no vote on a resolution was planned, as the US has veto power-two days after president Donald Trump reversed two decades of US policy on the holy city. The meeting was convened by no fewer than eight of the 14 non-US members of the council. This seemed a vivid show of the discord triggered by Trump’s announcement, which included plans to move the US embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.Asked what he expected to come from the UN meeting, one diplomat said: “Nothing.” Another said the session would show US “isolation” on the issue. The UN coordinator for the Middle East peace process, Nikolay Mladenov, warned that the US decision could lead to a spiral of violence among the Palestinians and others angered by what Trump has done.Indeed, clashes between Palestinians and Israeli security forces Friday left two person dead after calls for a “day of rage” from the Islamist movement Hamas. The British ambassador to the UN, Matthew Rycroft, said flat out that Britain disagrees with Trump’s move on Jerusalem and the embassy location.“These decisions are unhelpful for the prospects for peace in the region,” Rycroft said.He urged Trump to now come up with detailed proposals for an Israel-Palestinian peace accord, a goal which has eluded the US and the international community for decades. The status of Jerusalem is one of the most hotly contested issues in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.Israel seized control of the east of the city in 1967 and later annexed it in moves never recognised by the international community.Israel considers the city its undivided capital, but Palestinians believe the east is illegally occupied and see it as the capital of their future state.Five European countries on the council insisted the new US policy is not in line with UN resolutions including one that considers east Jerusalem to be Israeli-occupied.At Friday’s meeting, US ambassador Nikki Haley defended Trump as remaining committed to the peace process and a two state solution if the Israelis and Palestinians choose this.Haley said that in his reversal of US foreign policy, Trump was simply recognising reality, since the Israeli government and parliament are located in Jerusalem. And she recalled that Trump insists his decision has no impact on whatever Israelis and Palestinians ultimately decide on boundaries and borders of the city, which is holy to Muslims, Christians and Jews.“I understand the concerns that members have in calling this session,” Haley said. “Change is hard.”last_img read more

Cheddar Buys Rate My Professors Website From Viacom

first_imgMillennial-targeted news startup Cheddar is getting into the prof-assessment biz with the acquisition of Rate My Professors from Viacom. The RateMyProfessors.com website and its app are used by 6 million college students monthly, who write an average of 125,000 new professor and course ratings per month. Currently, it hosts over 20 million ratings across 1.8 million professors, spanning nearly every college and university in the U.S.Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed. Viacom bought RateMyProfessors.com in 2007, where it had been housed in the conglomerate’s MTVU college network group.Cheddar’s pickup of Rate My Professors comes after its May 2018 acquisition of Viacom’s MTV Networks on Campus, the distribution platform for MTVU. Cheddar used that to launch CheddarU, a collegiate-focused news network that runs on 1,600 TV screens on 600 U.S. campuses. With the MTVU deal, Carlo DiMarco — who ran MTVU and Rate My Professors as SVP of digital networks for Viacom Music and Entertainment Group — joined Cheddar. Flexible color displays with microfluidics

first_img The method also deviates from existing techniques of liquid crystals or organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs), which consume energy at the level of the light-emitting pixel. The technique houses a microfluidic water droplet train as a flexible, reflective display. The working principle of the system is based on a rotary liquid selector with suction-based negative pressure to drive the droplets in the intended direction and form a predetermined sign.Microchannels of the proposed device were fabricated with the flexible polymer, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), a material with properties that include transparency under visible light and permeability to air. The authors used soft lithography and bonding techniques to create PDMS-PDMS microchannels with pixel patterns ranging from 400-800 μm in diameter and 50-200 μm in height. In the device architecture, the patterns were connected via linear channels of 100-200 μm in width. Since the material is permeable to air and gas soluble, a thin Parylene layer (500 nm thick) was deposited within the microchannels to prevent the leakage and evaporation of air and water. Credit: Microsystems and Nanoengineering, doi: 10.1038/s41378-018-0018-1 To fabricate an optimized pixel size, the authors devised a relationship between the microchannel geometry and water loss in order to maintain a specific volume of dyed water as droplets advanced in the device. The device design and optimization included measurements of the minimal differential pressure required to drive dyed water droplets through the microchannels. The pressure within the microfluidic device suction system was controlled with a computer-aided valve system, and the switch control was programmed using MATLAB. In addition, the capacity for color switching and droplet control was assessed at the level of the single pixel for optimized image display. The relationship between droplet position and the time of negative pressure applied was optimized to indicate that the device could be controlled at the level of the single pixel. The schematic principles of device design and fabrication: The proposed microfluidic device made of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) polymer, using standard photolithography fabrication techniques to form pixel-patterned microchannels. The pressure inside the microfluidic device was regulated with a computer-controlled valve system composed of a solenoid valve, vacuum pump and air regulator. The switch control was programmed by MATLAB and gauge pressure controlled by the in-built regulator. Credit: Microsystems and Nanoengineering, doi: 10.1038/s41378-018-0018-1 Journal information: Nature Communications , Nature A new study published on Microsystems and Nanoengineering by Kazuhiro Kobayashi and Hiroaki Onoe details the development of a flexible and reflective multicolor display system that does not require continued energy supply for color retention. The idea aims to find futuristic applications with sustainable color displays and replace existing electronic display signs currently used for multicolor messages and images. While the concept originates from electronic paper or flexible electronics that look like print on paper (developed for smart wear), the proposed method simply relies on sequentially introduced colored water droplets and air pockets in a microfluidic device precisely fabricated on a flexible polymer to maintain stable bitmap images without energy consumption. © 2018 Phys.org This document is subject to copyright. Play it on loop

first_img‘Female Dj’s are no dolly birds!’ says DJane July Loop. Before this beauty hits Zerzura on 4 May, she gets candid with Millennium Post. Read on…Tell us a bit about yourself. Where did you start from?I am from Ukraine and working as a DJ from past 4 and a half years and have travelled across the world for work. I have played in countries like Switzerland, Italy, Poland, China, Korea, Turkey, Egypt and many more. I started my career as a DJ from my own city – Ukraine.   Also Read – ‘Playing Jojo was emotionally exhausting’Where did the interest in music come in and the plans to become a DJ and go behind the console?I love listening to music and doing mixing. I was crazy about rock music since I was in my teens. I used to party a lot with my friends. One of my DJ friends taught me how to play, but at that time it was just a hobby. But now music has become a part of my life and I can’t live without music and crazy people on the dance floor.Tell us about what made it for you. Also Read – Leslie doing new comedy special with NetflixMy never-ending love for music and the crazy grooving people on the dance floor. I mark a success for myself when I make the entire crowd in the venue dance like crazy on the beats I play.  I will always remember the big artists I have worked with like Tara Mcdonald, Armin van Buuren, Dj Ralvero, Ottawan etc. They really helped me to reach where I have.     Tell us about making it big – was it a long journey and a tough struggle? In the beginning of my career I used to play in small parties, usually a pre-party.  It wasn’t a long journey for me because I got my first break to work with a well known DJ from London. It was my first assignment abroad in Istanbul. I played warm up for him. After the show we worked together for almost one month and I at that moment understood what is really to be a DJ. Is it harder to be a female DJ as compared to your male counterparts?Female DJ’s were largely regarded as a gimmick, a ‘dolly bird’  to gaze at and to be taken seriously, as someone who might actually know how to present music, was almost an impossibility. People in various countries have different mindsets.  Some people don’t believe that a female DJ can play and take a party on a high. They look at me or my photo and think I am just a model standing near the console. I love facing the challenges and with these people I love breaking of that stereotype thoughts. Usually, after my party, people come to me and say: Wow you really can play!!! What are the essential ingredients needed to become a DJ?You should love music and have an ability of sensing the crowd’s music requirements. Sometimes the taste of the crowd is far different from yours, at that moment you need to change your preferences and need to adapt according to the crowd. Is this your first visit to India? What sort of reaction are you expecting from Delhi? It is my third trip to India. I have heard that the Delhi crowd is the most energetic crowd. I am expecting a lot from the Delhiites. I want to drive my crowd crazy with my beats. Earlier Delhi crowd was only open to Bollywood and commercial music. But now with the increase of music knowledge among Delhiites the preferences has been changed. People are better informed now and they also enjoy all the genres of music. Tell us what tops your playlist right now – the top tracks on it…The top tracks on my playlists are:  Baauer – Harlem Shake; Macklemore & Ryan Lewis – Thrift Shop; Pitbull and Christina Aguilera – Feel This Moment.last_img read more

Echoing Silence

first_imgIt is often said that photography is about capturing souls and not smiles. “We are one!” believes Italian artiste, Attilio Tripodi who makes one introspect and visualize landscapes and human emotions in a new way as one takes a walk through his photography exhibition titled, ‘Temporary Solitudes’ at Indian International Centre (IIC) fromJuly 6-16, 11 am to 7pm in the national Capital.“We share our lives with those around us, through our thoughts, actions and emotions as human nature drives us to be sociable. We are connected to each other. We have more or less consolidated our material reality, but we are not often aware of our inner spiritual nature or worse, we deny it,” says Tripodi pointing towards one of his captures. Also Read – ‘Playing Jojo was emotionally exhausting’ One would witness lines, colours and graphic elements synced in such a way that enhances the ability of an image to communicate. There are around 50 photographs captured in different countries. Also, you will mark only one person in every picture with prevailing landscapes and various angles to rouse emotions.Elaborating on the exhibition…‘Temporary Solitudes’ is my humble gaze of a fragment of humanity. I feel that I am a part of it. I am conscious of the invisible thread that connects the whole of humanity, and that whenever a person gets in the way of its evolution, the benefit is collective.  Also Read – Leslie doing new comedy special with NetflixI do not wish to disseminate any message but only interpret things and sounds that surround me with a tool called photography. While selecting images for the exhibition, I preferred the ones that matched my aesthetic sense – lines, shapes, and textures can be seen in all my photos.Inspired by human landscapesI always prefer ‘human landscapes’ in my photographs, an innate vision. I like to photograph people immersed in their daily lives, as I too am a part of it and especially because in my journey of inner and spiritual growth, I have learned that we are all connected to each other. I imagined that the protagonists of my photos deliberately seek the solitude required to create a contact with one’s own soul, a necessary prelude to begin a process of growth of evolution. On capturing emotions…Capturing expressions, joy, smiles, awkwardness, signs of aging that draw and redraw faces of different people excite me. I love watching people and capturing them. It paves a way to see myself, through this endless game of mirrors that is life. The journeyIt took me a year and a half to focus on this concept. The images came in a spontaneous and natural way. There were no such challenges, everything just fell in place. I also found some photos taken a few years ago that very well amalgamated with the other photos of the collection as they in sync with its aesthetic expression.Black and white huesMy photos usually express liveliness through colours. For ‘Temporary Solitudes’, I preferred using monochrome as it connects to the theme which is meditative and intimate. The images express a feeling of vitality which unites them, that perhaps have a tinge of melancholy but never sad. I preferred minimal shots without any disturbing elements to accentuate the introspective aspect.Art is never static It is not very different from my previous works. As the Talmud (central text of Rabbinic Judaism) states, “We do not see things as they are, but we see things as we are,” I believe it affirms the uniqueness of each person, despite the similarities. Currently, I’m working on a completely different collection, dedicated to symbols and contradictions of human nature, without moralizing or judging, with a touch of vibrant creativity. Photography is an art and art is a dynamic concept, always moving, never static.last_img read more

Justins note America is in unprecedented territo

first_imgJustin’s note: America is in unprecedented territory. For starters, the average American is over $40,000 in debt… and that’s grown 15% over the past four years. Meanwhile, wages and the U.S. economy aren’t keeping up…Stansberry Research founder Porter Stansberry believes there is only one possible outcome: a “Debt Jubilee.”That’s why today, we’re sharing the first chapter of Porter’s book The American Jubilee. In it, he reveals the four conditions that would bring about a debt jubilee, and shows just how close we are to one taking place…By Porter Stansberry, founder, Stansberry ResearchIf you study American history, you’ll see that Debt Jubilees occur only in a unique type of extreme political environment. After all, a Jubilee is a radical measure. The government essentially steals money from one group and hands it to another. In order for this to occur, four elements must be in place… Sounds familiar, doesn’t it?We have the largest gap ever between the rich and poor…We have huge increases in violent protests about immigration and race…We have a completely ineffective government…And we have extreme animosity toward the “elites” from both the left and right.Check… check… check… and check. There’s actually a name for this type of political and social phenomenon. It’s called “populism.” And it emerges every 30 to 40 years. There must be cultural threats from those with different values or from outsiders (in other words, minority populations and immigrants). During the 1930s, just like today, the wealthy acquired a much higher-than-normal percentage of our nation’s wealth…And in both the 1930s and today, the percentage of the population who were foreign-born was higher than normal… causing animosity among the “common man.”Just like today, the economic conditions of the 1930s caused extreme income inequality.Back then, the top 10% earned 45% of all income (compared with 50% today) and owned 85% of the wealth (compared with 75% today).Even the political characters are the same…The 1930s saw a popular socialist presidential candidate just like we had in 2016. Huey Long was a former governor of Louisiana and a U.S. senator. He proposed an income cap at $1 million… a 30-hour federal work week… and 100% income taxes at the highest level.Long even established 27,000 “Share Our Wealth” clubs around the country and had a radio show that was listened to by one in five Americans. So where did this all lead?It led to America’s most dramatic Debt Jubilee to date…Regards,Porter Stansberry Founder, Stansberry ResearchJustin’s note: According to Porter, a financial revolution is already starting to take place across America. Many aren’t aware of it. But the Charlottesville riots… the burning of inner cities… the resurgence of neo-Nazi groups… and the “Black Lives Matter” protests are all signs that a Jubilee is imminent. But you still have time to protect yourself. Porter and his team of analysts have put together a presentation to explain everything. You’ll learn how the Jubilee will play out, as well as the steps you can take to survive… and prosper… once it hits. Watch it here.In Case You Missed It…On April 26, 2018, Casey Research is hosting a pivotal event… the Pot Stock Millionaire Summit. At this summit, Doug Casey, along with Crisis Investing editor Nick Giambruno, will discuss five frontier marijuana stocks set to soar as legalization gets underway. Populist movements are characterized by extreme anger at the government, at the wealthy, at the establishments, and at “newcomers” and minorities. As the director of an Alabama group that tracks violence and hate crimes around the country told Newsweek in June 2017: “There has been a massive explosion of violence across the country.”I’m sure you’ve seen this yourself. The hatred and anger is like nothing I’ve witnessed in my lifetime. And it’s coming from all sides. A member of my staff went to a book reading in Baltimore by one of the most famous left-wing authors in the country. The author told the crowd that he wished he could go back in time and smother Donald Trump in his crib as a baby… or convince Trump’s mother to have an abortion. This epitomizes the political and social environment in America today. From the protests and marches… to the refusals to stand during the national anthem…From Black Lives Matter to the anti-immigration movements… to the rejuvenation of white supremacists… to the tripling of membership in the Democratic Socialists of America. It’s clear we are in the middle of an extreme “populist” period in America.Ray Dalio, one of the richest men in America, studied the political environments of the past 100 years and concluded in March 2017…The last time that it [populism] existed as a major force in the world was in the 1930s, when most countries became populist. Over the last year, it has again emerged as a major force.Look at this chart. The big spikes show when populist politicians got the most votes in America and abroad…So, what does this all mean?It proves that what we’re experiencing today is eerily similar to what happened in the 1930s… right before the biggest and most radical Debt Jubilee in American history. The economic comparison is stunning.Interest rates hit zero leading up to each of these periods…The government went into mega money-printing mode during both periods…Printing money caused the stock market and other risky assets to boom during both periods… boosting the wealth of the rich, but doing nothing for the poor… — How I almost lost $1,000,000 in 8 hours In 8 hours, I almost lost my entire $1,000,000 life savings. That type of speed is key. Here’s what he told me:Most ordinary investors miss these opportunities because they don’t know what professional investors like hedge funds and institutions are doing. But to be fair, these big-money firms work hard to keep their activity quiet – because until they’re done, it doesn’t help them if people know what they’re buying. That’s why speed is key.In his most recent Palm Beach Trader issue, Jason identified a small tech company that institutions are snapping up quickly. And his system is showing there’s likely more demand from hedge funds – which could lead to triple-digit gains in just a few months. Semis got smoked last year and were essentially a toxic wasteland… And we noticed a major repricing of semis earlier this month with some stellar earnings and heavy institutional accumulation. As usual, Jason nailed that call…The sector has shot up nearly 30% in this year’s first quarter – its best start ever. And the overall market has followed. But if you think you’ve missed the boat on semiconductors, think again. Jason says his system is continuing to signal institutional buying in the sector. And that means more gains ahead for investors in these companies…Big Money Is Piling InRegular Palm Beach Daily readers know that we call Jason our Wall Street insider because he spent nearly two decades as a trader (including being a partner at Cantor Fitzgerald). But few people know this: In 2012, his firm helped create Tradeworx. The name might not ring a bell. But if you’ve read about high-speed trading in The Wall Street Journal or The New York Times – or watched the 60 Minutes special on it – you actually do know about Tradeworx. It was the fastest high-speed trading system on Wall Street – making trades in less than a second. But here’s the thing…After Jason left Cantor Fitzgerald, he created his own breakthrough system – one that can spot the biggest (and most lucrative) trades on Wall Street… up to a month in advance. That same system flagged institutional buying in semiconductors earlier this year. And it’s proven to be highly accurate on a number of other occasions, too. (For example, it predicted the sell-off in February 2018 and the rally we saw at the start of this year.) For the eightandahalf years she spent in prison

first_imgFor the eight-and-a-half years she spent in prison, Kristan Kerr looked forward to one thing every month: a visit from her daughter, Chloe. Visit by visit, she watched Chloe grow from a toddler into a young adult.”I just watched her grow all the way up,” Kerr says. “One visit, she couldn’t read, and then the next visit she was reading something to me.”Convicted for aggravated robbery in 2011 – she was the driver — Kerr says she wasn’t making good choices back then, and it meant missing out on a lot.She and Chloe would talk on the phone and send letters and visit, but she says you can’t do the physical, nurturing part of parenting from prison. Even though Kerr trusted that Chloe was being cared for by her grandmother, she says you never stop worrying about your kid. There are more than 225,000 women behind bars, according to the most recent 2017 federal statistics. Half are in state and federal prisons, the other half in local jails. It’s actually a slight decrease, coming after years of ballooning incarceration among women. From 1980 to 2016, the country saw a 700% increase in the number of women behind bars. Exactly how many are mothers isn’t well tracked, but a survey of women in Texas prisons showed more than 80% of them are moms.Lawmakers across the country are now considering ways to send fewer moms with minor children to jail and prison, and to help preserve parent-child bonds when they’re locked up.In Texas, lawmakers are considering bills that would promote diversion programs, probation or other community-based sentences over jail or prison time to avoid breaking up families. Tennessee recently passed legislation to do that. There were some tough times for Chloe, who’s now 12. It was hard seeing other kids with their moms, but she says it’s been good since her mother was released in October. Not that it’s been easy, exactly.”It’s been a little bit challenging because I’ve still got to get used to her, I’ve got to learn her, get comfortable with her,” Chloe says. But, she adds, “I’m happier now that she’s here, that I get to see her every day.””Many of the women, once they get arrested, are scrambling to find someone to take care of their kids,” says Michele Deitch, who studies prison issues at the University of Texas at Austin. “So a lot of kids get shuttled from place to place, and if they’re not able to find a place for them, then many of the kids end up in foster care.”Other states are looking at incarcerating parents closer to their children, and expanding visitation so kids can see mom or dad more often. Incarcerated parents who have stronger relationships with their kids, Deitch says, behave better while inside, and are less likely to commit future crimes after they’re released.”It’s really critical for the parent to not lose touch with their child, and to stay involved and to feel like they can make a difference in the child’s life to be aware of what’s happening to them,” Deitch says.Growing up with their incarcerated parents can be damaging to their children. That’s part of the reason children with incarcerated parents are more likely to end up in the criminal justice system themselves, according to Dallas lawyer Brittany Barnett. She launched Girls Embracing Mothers, a nonprofit aimed at improving outcomes for girls and their incarcerated mothers, after her own mother was sent to prison.”Even though I was a young adult when my mom went to prison, my sister and I were devastated by her incarceration,” Barnett says. “It not only impacts the person in prison, but the children are the hidden victims of their parents’ crimes.”Kristan and Chloe Kerr took part in the Girls Embracing Mothers program. Barnett says she’s optimistic about reform legislation, but hopes it’s just a first step toward a more effective and less punitive justice system.”These women aren’t bad women, they made bad choices,” Barnett says.Texas Rep. James White, a Republican, says the crimes women commit are often different from their male peers. He heads the House Committee on Corrections, and introduced a bill to address issues faced by women in prison, including pregnancy and childbirth.”I hear a lot of offenses that are linked to domestic violence, so they may stab their spouse that’s abusing them and their kids,” White says, “young women that have experienced repeated sexual abuse from a family member, women who have fallen into the trap of addiction.”Researchers agree that a history of trauma underlies a lot of the criminal behavior that lands women in jails and prisons. Kristan Kerr says many of the moms in prison with her struggled with psychological and behavioral issues.”Women, they love their kids,” she says. “Maybe they’re stuck with addiction but that’s a sickness, but that doesn’t mean they don’t want their children.”Since she’s been out, Kerr has been working through a list of goals she set for herself to rebuild her life. She’s got a job, got her driver’s license, and she’s spending lots of time with her daughter. Copyright 2019 KERA. To see more, visit KERA.last_img read more

What’s This? 5 min read In this series called Member Showcase, we publish interviews with members of The Oracles. This interview is with Alexander Kokhanovskyy, CEO and co-founder of DreamTeam, which helps esports gamers find teammates, earn money, and more. It was condensed by The Oracles.Who are you?  Alexander Kokhanovskyy: I’m a former professional esports player who turned his passion into a business. I realized that esports had a bright future when I competed in the 2001 World Cyber Games in South Korea. In 2010, I built Na’Vi, a popular esports team. In 2015 my partner and I created ESforce, a vertically-integrated esports holding company, because we predicted that selling media rights and sponsorships would be lucrative. In early 2018, we sold the business to Mail.ru for $100 million. Now I’m building DreamTeam, the first esports and gaming platform that solves problems for hundreds of millions of gamers who want to find teammates, improve their skills, manage teams, and earn money. What are you more skilled at than most people in the world? Alexander Kokhanovskyy: I’m an esports insider with unique expertise because I have been part of the industry as it has grown. I know it inside out from multiple angles: as an amateur player and later a successful professional player, coach, team manager, and CEO of a professional team.I understand the industry’s challenges and can see where it is going — as well as future trends. That knowledge helped me create a platform that solves the industry’s problems. What excites you the most about your business right now?Alexander Kokhanovskyy: We can help millions of gamers by providing a clear path from novice to amateur to professional. By lowering the barrier to entry from years and millions of dollars to minutes and a few dollars a month, we are facilitating the mass adoption of esports and competitive gaming. What book changed your mindset or life?Alexander Kokhanovskyy: There are two books that changed my life. The first is Napoleon Hill’s “Think and Grow Rich,” which details how to develop a formula to become rich financially and also spiritually. It taught me to think positively and become more results-oriented.The second book is “Pitch Anything” by Oren Klaff, which is about how to become a great salesman. One way or another, this skill can help everyone in life. What was your biggest challenge starting in business? How did you overcome it?Alexander Kokhanovskyy: The biggest challenge starting in business is to believe in what you do and your success. If you start doubting yourself or what you are trying to achieve, it becomes obvious to everyone and nothing will work. So push through the difficulties.Personal doubt is inevitable. To overcome it, you must think positively. I learned this skill from friends and business partners, reading the right books, and surrounding myself with the right people. This has helped mold me into who I am today. How do you define great leadership?Alexander Kokhanovskyy: Leadership is about truly listening, guiding others instead of telling them what to do, showing respect to those around you, and being brave enough to hire people who are better than you in certain areas.A great leader doesn’t just teach — they’re also able to learn. It’s particularly important to learn to accept your mistakes. How do you hire top talent?Alexander Kokhanovskyy: We’re really picky about hiring. We are looking for the most qualified specialists who aren’t just able to build the product, but also add to it with their insight and expertise. It’s difficult to find high-level product specialists in Ukraine, and even more difficult to hire them. We always get recommendations from former employers and have several rounds of interviews. In addition to professional skills, we also consider whether the person is able to grow. Personal skills are very important because we want people who share the same vision, values, and mission.Which single habit gives you 80 percent of your results?Alexander Kokhanovskyy: Self-control and organization. I am always aware of what is going on in the business. Everything is planned out and written down. I know what I need to do, when, and whether we need a new solution or strategy to achieve our goals. This helps those around me stay organized as well. Never forget to treat others as you want them to treat you. What would you like to be doing in three years?Alexander Kokhanovskyy: My professional and personal goal is to make DreamTeam the biggest one-stop shop for the sport of the future: esports. I want to serve as the one and only point of entry for the entire industry, so every single gamer has the opportunity to reach their goals and fulfill their dreams. What do you want to be known for, or what do you want your legacy to be?Alexander Kokhanovskyy: I want to change the entire gaming ecosystem. Marijuana Workers Now Outnumber Bakers and Other Common Careers

first_img Next Article Add to Queue –shares For an industry still in its early stages, legal marijuana already has surpassed many other businesses in generating jobs.In a new report called the Marijuana Business Factbook 2017, the marijuana industry is reported to have created 165,000 to 230,000 full- and part-time jobs in the United States. According to the report, that means there are more people working in the marijuana industry than there are bakers, dental hygienists and massage therapists. The job numbers include those working at cannabis retail stores, growing facilities, marijuana-infused product companies, testing labs and ancillary businesses such as transportation and security. The numbers represent “marijuana’s rapid transformation out of the black market and into a viable economic force,” according to the report.Related: Sorry, But No You Can’t Smoke Marijuana on the Las Vegas Strip Yet.Practical mattersThe numbers also underscore one of the two practical considerations for political leaders that go beyond the decades-old “war against drugs” debate that continues at the federal level. The first is that legalized marijuana generates huge amounts of tax income for state and local governments. For example, Oregon expects to reap $200 million in adult-use marijuana taxes by 2019, and that money will go to schools, roads and law enforcement. The tax dollars generated by Colorado and other western states have politicians in other cash-starved states, such as Illinois, hoping to legalize marijuana to help balance governmental budgets. The second, which the report focused on, is job creation. Nationwide, the numbers are expected to skyrocket as California, Massachusetts and Nevada allow adult-use sales and another big state, Florida, moves forward with a regulated medical marijuana industry.Though all the new legal marijuana markets will take time to fully develop, “they have the potential to create tens of thousands of new jobs in the marijuana industry,” according to the report.Putting it in perspectiveMarijuana also has been a boon to small businesses. The majority of the jobs in marijuana are concentrated on smaller operations that only need a handful of employees.Part of the reason for this is the fact marijuana remains an illegal drug at the federal level. Because legalization has happened in a state-by-state manner, large marijuana companies employing hundreds of workers have not materialized.Related: NBA Champion John Salley Talks About the ‘Seed to Sale’ Process for Cannabis BusinessBut the jobs continue to multiply. Assuming that most marijuana industry workers do not require a college degree, here are some other, similar occupations that the marijuana industry has either surpassed or approached in the number of workers:Short-order cooks (181,600)Electronics Installers and Repairers (136,100)Library Assistants (210,700)Boilermakers (17,400)Sheet metal workers (141,000)Again, the employment numbers will only grow as legal marijuana operations go into effect in new states. Moving forward on the debate about marijuana, expect politicians to start referencing the economic benefits of cannabis over long-held objections. They may find the economic bottom line on the marijuana industry is too strong to ignore. Easy Search. Quality Finds. Your partner and digital portal for the cannabis community. Russia Launches First Rocket From New Spaceport at Second Attempt

first_img Reuters This story originally appeared on Reuters Rockets Free Webinar | July 31: Secrets to Running a Successful Family Business Next Article Image credit: Mikhail Svetlov | Getty Images –shares Russia launched its first rocket from a new cosmodrome on Thursday, a day after a technical glitch forced a postponement of the event in a sign of continuing crisis in the nation’s space industry. An unmanned Soyuz-2.1A rocket, carrying three satellites, roared into a clear blue sky from the launchpad at Vostochny cosmodrome in the remote Amur Region near China’s border at 0501 Moscow time (0201 GMT), state television showed. The satellites separated from the rocket’s third stage about nine minutes into the flight and headed for their designated orbits, Russian news agencies quoted officials from the space agency Roscosmos as saying. The launch was called off less than two minutes before lift-off on Wednesday, upsetting President Vladimir Putin. He had flown thousands of kilometers to watch what Russian media and officials called a historic event.”I want to congratulate you. There is something to be proud of,” Putin told cosmodrome workers and Roscosmos officials after watching Thursday’s launch at Vostochny, Russian media reported.”The equipment overreached itself a little bit yesterday,” he said. “In principle, we could have held the launch yesterday, but the equipment overdid its job and stopped the launch. This is a normal thing.”His remarks contrasted with his tough words after Wednesday’s aborted launch, when he criticized Roscosmos and government officials for the large number of technical problems in the space industry, saying that “there should be an appropriate reaction”.Putin reprimanded Roscosmos head Igor Komarov and Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, who is in charge of space and military industries, Russian news agencies quoted Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov as saying.Corruption and glitchesProblems with Russian space rockets are worrisome not just for the Kremlin but also for the U.S. space program. NASA has depended on Russia to fly its astronauts to the International Space Station since it retired its space shuttle.Delays and corruption have blighted work on the new cosmodrome. A European Space Agency launch in French Guiana, using a similar Russian Soyuz rocket, was also delayed by technical problems this month. The Soviet Union pioneered manned space flight when it fired Yuri Gagarin into space in 1961.But since the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russia’s space program has had to retrench for lack of cash. For years it filled gaps in its budget by taking paying tourists into space. The Vostochny spaceport, the first civilian rocket launch site on Russian territory, is intended to phase out Russia’s reliance on the Baikonur cosmodrome, which it leases from ex-Soviet Kazakhstan.”The main thing is that this launch pad is now working, it has been prepared well by you and it is functioning,” Putin told cosmodrome workers on Thursday. “We are now facing a second stage here, to accommodate a heavy rocket.””We have a lot of work in front of us, and it’s daunting. But beyond all doubt, this is … a very serious step forward in the development of Russia’s space exploration.”(Reporting by Dmitry Solovyov; Editing by Andrew Roche) April 28, 2016 3 min read Learn how to successfully navigate family business dynamics and build businesses that excel. FirstofitsKind Consumer Benefits Coverage Index Illustrates Benefits Spending Patterns Across US

first_imgNew Index Provides Insights and Creates a Model to Help Consumers Better Understand and Prioritize Benefits Investments Benefitfocus, Inc., a leading cloud-based benefits management platform and services provider, announced the release of the Consumer Benefits Coverage Index (“the Index”). The Index creates a model for evaluating how adequately a consumer is protected through the employer-based benefits they’ve purchased. The value of the Index lies not only in serving as a benchmark for consumers to compare their own benefits coverage to that of their peers, but also to provide greater awareness on how they could better protect themselves and their families. For its initial findings, Benefitfocus examined a representative sample of US consumers and determined that the average consumer may not be adequately protected in key areas, and that there is opportunity for additional education when it comes to benefit selection.“We provide insight for the entire benefits industry comprised of employers, brokers, carriers and product suppliers into the purchasing behavior and coverage gaps present among consumers,” said Ray August, President & CEO, Benefitfocus. “The Index processes millions of enrollment transactions from our platform and transforms them into a simple model for employers and consumers to evaluate the fitness of their benefit decisions and raise their benefits IQ.”Marketing Technology News: Evergage Appoints Laura Saati as VP of Customer Success for Evergage’s Retail PracticeCreated by Benefitfocus using its proprietary, annually recurring research (previously published in the State of Employee Benefits reports), the Index draws on anonymized, actual benefits enrollment data pulled from the BENEFITFOCUS Platform. These benefits span across three product categories—health (e.g., dental, vision or health advocacy), wealth (e.g., life insurance or health spending accounts) and lifestyle (e.g., identity theft protection or pet insurance). Each benefits category in the Index is scored on a scale from 0 to 100 (with an aggregate score range of 0-300), reflecting the average spend by a consumer in these categories relative to their peer group. Scores can fall in one of three ranges that approximate optimal and sub-optimal coverage based on how similar or dissimilar an individual’s coverage is to their peer group.Marketing Technology News: DemandBlue launches DemandBlue Labs, a Salesforce Innovation Org for its Customers“Our goal is to use our massive data intelligence to drive greater awareness of the benefits purchasing habits of working Americans,” said Jennifer Clark, Director of Artificial Intelligence Strategy at Benefitfocus. “For employers, this data set may help them optimize their benefits offerings based on their employee demographics. For consumers, the Index sheds much-needed light into purchasing habits and may lead to a better understanding of what makes sense for individuals based on their salary, age, etc. – which are constantly changing. The Index provides a framework to refer to when considering coverage and life transitions.”Marketing Technology News: Tappx launches App-ads-txt.com to Drive Adoption for App-ads.txt First-of-its-Kind Consumer Benefits Coverage Index Illustrates Benefits Spending Patterns Across US PRNewswireApril 23, 2019, 4:03 pmApril 23, 2019 Artificial IntelligenceBenefitfocusBENEFITFOCUS PlatformBenefits Coverage IndexMarketing TechnologyNewsRay August Previous ArticleFishbowl, Inc.
