Doubledown Unable to Sell Magazine Assets

first_imgAt an auction held late last week in U.S. bankruptcy court in New York, Doubledown Media, a publisher of magazines aimed at the Wall Street elite that went out of business in February, did not receive any “acceptable” bids for its remaining magazine assets, including subscriber lists.“One bidder made an offer but it was not acceptable to the trustee,” Andrea Fisher, a senior attorney with Squire Sanders & Dempsey—the firm representing Doubledown’s trustee—told FOLIO:. “The trustee will continue to entertain offers for the assets. We’ve received some inquires and the hope is that the assets sell, which will provide a distribution to [Doubledown’s] creditors.”According to the auction notice, the minimum bid for Doubledown’s Dealmaker was $100,000. For Corporate Leader and Trader magazines the lowest acceptable bid was $50,000. The minimum bid for Cigar Report was $25,000. Corporate Air, meanwhile, carried a minimum bid of $55,000. Doubledown previously received an offer from a company called Private Air Media—which is headed by the magazine’s founder Dee Dee Morrison—and Knight Images Inc., for $50,000.The minimum bid for all five titles was $300,000, or the aggregate amount of the highest bids for each property plus $20,000, the notice said.A Once-Rising Publisher Hits BottomCiting “unprecedented times,” Doubledown went out of business in February and filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy liquidation not long after. “The combination of the media depression, the Wall Street implosion and the credit slowdown were collectively too much for our company—probably any company in our shoes—to overcome,” president Randall Lane wrote in an e-mail to staffers at the time.According to court documents obtained by FOLIO: this spring, more than 350 claims totaling $4 million have been made against Doubledown, including those from a group of ex-employees, investors, three printers, vendors, designers, writers, lawyers and more. Nearly half of Doubledown’s assets include $1,013,520.43 in accounts receivable—money Doubledown has yet to be paid.In terms of the bankruptcy proceedings, the sale hearing has been adjourned until October 6, Fisher said.last_img read more

Navy Close to Deal to Develop Solar Array at NAS Jacksonville

first_imgThe Navy expects to complete a deal shortly with a utility to build a solar farm on 50 acres at Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Fla. The project is estimated to generate 5 megawatts of electricity that would be delivered to the commercial grid, reported WOKV. An environmental assessment determined the project would not have a significant impact.“The solar project would benefit both the local community and the Navy, bringing renewable energy to the area and energy security with it being on Navy property,” Sue Brink, a spokeswoman for Naval Facilities Engineering Command Southeast, told the radio station. The secretary of the Navy set a goal for the service’s shore-based operations to acquire one-half of their electricity needs from renewable sources by 2020. After surpassing the secretary’s goal of bringing one gigawatt of renewable energy into procurement by the end of 2015, the Navy now is exploring the latest advances such as battery storage, electrification, fuel cells and microgrids to further enhance its energy security, operational capability, strategic flexibility and resource availability. Navy Again Delays Critical Work On USS Gerald Ford

first_imgThe Navy has again delayed its completion of critical work on the new aircraft carrier the USS Gerald R. Ford, Breaking Defense reported Tuesday.James Geurts, Navy acquisitions secretary, announced the delay, saying the primary issue is its new weapons elevators which are magnet-driven rather than by cables on Nimitz-class carriers. The new elevators can lift thousands of pounds of munitions to the deck more quickly than older carriers. The carrier is billions over budget and months overdue. Two of the carrier’s 11 elevators are currently operational as the ship remains on track for going to sea in October while work on the inoperable elevators continues. It had been slated to sail in July, but that was postponed when it became clear the elevators would not operate. The new elevators are a leap in technology. The Nimitz-class elevators move 10,500 pounds at 100 feet per minute while the Ford-class elevators lift 20,000 pounds at 150 feet per minute.Photo by Mass Communication Specialist Seaman Marissa Bacon ADC AUTHORlast_img read more

State Rep Dave Robertson His Colleagues Help Tewksbury Take Official Possession Of

first_imgBOSTON, MA — Below is a recent press release from State Representative Dave Robertson’s office:August 2nd, 1967 was the beginning of a long story between Tewksbury, the State, and a piece of land bounded by Livingston Street and forever deeded for recreational purposes. Transferred under Act 497, the Now, 53 years later, the parks, fields, and trails known as Saunders Field are officially part of the town of Tewksbury thanks to the work of the state delegation and town.“As a child I played, or tried to play, baseball on those fields. I watched the 4th of July there, rode my bike from the Middle School to the recreational department, and even attended the haunted house,” said Representative Dave Robertson (D-Tewksbury) upon the transfer of the deed to the town. “The entire time I had no idea that it was not officially town land until I was older, which left me perplexed. Because of this it was a special honor to work with Senator Finegold and Nguyen on getting this issue wrapped up and securing Livingston permanently for the town.”“Transferring the Livingston Street Fields back to the Town of Tewksbury was one of my top priorities upon coming into office in January,” added Senator Barry Finegold (D-Andover). “Working together with Representatives Nguyen and Robertson, we were able to resolve a decades-old issue in a matter of months. These 35 acres are invaluable to the community, and I’m thrilled that they will now be officially owned and controlled by the town.”“I am very proud to work on behalf of the residents of Tewksbury with my colleagues,” noted Representative Tram Nguyen (D-Andover). “I am especially delighted that we were able to work together to get the deed transferred and make certain that the Livingston Street Fields that the residents of Tewksbury have long enjoyed now officially belong to the town.”The Saunders Recreational Fields, often known to locals as the Livingston Street Fields, are the crowning jewel of the Tewksbury park system. Encompassing 35 acres the land is host to tennis courts, lacrosse fields, football fields, the majority of baseball fields, and more. Recently the town and state have recently made major investments into the center, including the opening of a water park and fitness court, with state budget funding allocated to the improvement and upgrade of parking amenities for those using the unimproved lots. The fields are also utilized for large-scale community events, such as the 4th of July, and are the most frequented recreational area for the town.“This is great for the town,” said Selectman Jay Kelley. “We have great programs and opportunities, and this helps secure a future for our town. I look forward to seeing many more generations of kids growing up and playing there.”Like Wilmington Apple on Facebook. Follow Wilmington Apple on Twitter. Follow Wilmington Apple on Instagram. The Beyond 1 is reportedly the same size as today’s Galaxy S9, but with even slimmer bezels. It’s expected to have a 6.1-inch screen and one front-facing camera. The front-facing camera, at least according to the tweeted photo, uses Samsung’s Infinity-O display, which has a hole punched out of one corner. Phones,I’m shocked — shocked! — to learn that stores are turning Labor Day into an excuse to sell stuff. Wait — no, I’m not. As much as I respect the original intent of the holiday (which became official back in 1894), to most of us, it’s just a bonus day off — one that’s blissfully tacked onto a weekend. So, yeah, stores; go ahead, run your sales. I’m listening. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Labor Day doesn’t bring out bargains to compete with the likes of Black Friday (which will be here before you know it), but there are definitely some sales worth your time. For example:We’ve rounded up the best Labor Day mattress deals. We’ve also gathered the best Labor Day laptop deals at Best Buy.The 2019 Vizio P Series Quantum is back under $999.Be sure to check out Amazon’s roughly three dozen Labor Day deals on TVs and audio. Keep in mind, of course, that products may sell out at any time, even if the sale itself is still running. Note that CNET may get a share of revenue from the sale of the products featured on this page. An Echo Dot makes a fine match for any Fire edition TV, because you can use the latter to say things like, “Alexa, turn on the TV.” Right now, the 24-inch Insignia Fire TV Edition starts at just $100, while the 32-inch Toshiba Fire TV Editions is on sale for $130. Just add any Fire TV Edition to your cart, then add a third-gen Echo Dot, and presto: The latter is free. The problem with most entry-level laptops: They come with mechanical hard drives. That makes for a mighty slow Windows experience. This Lenovo model features a 128GB solid-state drive, so it should be pretty quick to boot and load software, even with its basic processor. Plus, it has a DVD-burner! That’s not something you see in many modern laptops, especially at this price. Though not technically a Labor Day sale, it’s happening during Labor Day sale season — and it’s too good not to share. Nationwide Distributors, via Google Express, has just about the best AirPods deal we’ve seen (when you apply promo code ZBEDWZ at checkout). Triumph and Williams are teaming up on future electric motorcycles

first_imgEnlarge ImageIf Triumph has its way, in a few years it will be able to sell you electric versions of your favorite Triumph models. Triumph Electric motorcycles are becoming increasingly “a thing” and you know that’s the case when legacy brands like Harley-Davidson are getting in on it. Now, though, a new player is entering the game, and it’s Triumph.Yeah, that Triumph that makes scramblers and Bonnevilles and Rockets and Tigers. It announced on Wednesday that it was initiating a program that it’s calling “TE-1,” which will focus on the development of compact battery-electric drivetrain options for future motorcycle models. Here’s the part that will turn your brain into a hot little coal: Triumph is teaming up with Williams to get this project going. Yes, that Williams. The famed Formula One engineering firm, the same company that helped Singer get its Dynamics and Lightweighting Study cars off the ground.”This new collaboration represents an exciting opportunity for Triumph and its partners to be leaders in the technology that will enable the electrification of motorcycles,” said Triumph CEO Nick Bloor in a statement. “Project Triumph TE-1 is one part of our electric motorcycle strategy, focused on delivering what riders want and expect from their Triumph, which is the perfect balance of handling, performance and usability.”Based on Bloor’s statement, we’d expect that Triumph’s path toward electrification will differ significantly from, say, Harley-Davidson’s. Where H-D is offering one electric motorcycle — the Livewire — with a stratospheric price tag and then plans to offer two other models that are more akin to scooters or electric bicycles than they are motorcycles, Triumph will offer no-compromise electric versions of its ICE models.”The team at Williams Advanced Engineering is looking forward to applying our expertise in the electrification of transport with our partners,” said Craig Wilson, managing director of Williams Advanced Engineering, in a statement.  “Williams has powered a number of world-renowned electric vehicles already and this will be a significant further step in our work by taking that knowledge onto two wheels.”Now, historically, when a company like Triumph would announce something as grand as Project Triumph TE-1, we’d have viewed it with a great deal of skepticism. Triumph, in particular, has had a checkered financial past, and developing new tech is expensive. Now, though, Triumph is at the top of its game, and its models are among the best in the industry. We’re genuinely excited to see how this turns out. 2020 BMW 330e first drive: A plug-in 3 Series without compromise Motorcycles Electric Cars Tags 2020 Harley-Davidson LiveWire first ride: Harley’s electric future is bright Share your voice Harley-Davidson’s LiveWire is the sporty electric streetbike we need Post a comment Triumph 47 Photos More From Roadshow 2020 Volvo XC60 T8 Polestar Engineered first drive: Almost Super Trouper 0last_img read more

Best phone for gaming in 2019 Razer 2 vs Asus ROG Xiaomi

first_img 64GB Black Shark: Having the joystick on the Gamepad accessory and actual buttons changed PUBG for me. It was so easy to run and move. With my fingers off the screen I could see the game better, too. Note that the Gamepad kind of bends and feels like it’s a sneeze away from breaking. It makes the Nintendo Switch feel like a robust piece of German engineering.Razer: After 12 minutes the phone was very warm. Game control was OK, but when I played with the optional $150 Razer Raiju Mobile game controller it was a far more enjoyable experience — especially since I didn’t have to hold onto a warm phone with my bare hands.Red Magic Mars: The phone got warm after 20 minutes. The capacitive shoulder buttons are great to have, especially for gunfire and kneeling.ROG: The fan popped on right away at a low speed, but the phone never got hot. Mapping onscreen controls to the pressure-sensitive shoulder buttons (AirTriggers) was easy and made playing PUBG much easier.Sdorica Sunset Best value gaming phone Xiaomi Black Shark Best overall gaming phone $399 Black Shark 8,371 Black Shark: After 7 minutes, the phone got warm. The physical buttons on the Gamepad were nice, but I didn’t find much of an advantage over screen taps.Razer: After 8 minutes, the phone warmed up on the sides and corners. The screen made the constantly shifting graphics look amazing.Red Magic Mars: In darker scenes, it was difficult to see details on the display. Like the ROG, the touch shoulder buttons were OK, but I preferred the onscreen controls for this game.ROG: After 4 minutes the fan accessory kicked in. The phone remained lukewarm throughout gameplay though. The main game controls are tapping and tapping-and-holding on the screen. I tried using the pressure-sensitive AirTriggers instead, but for fast jumps and holding flips I found more nuance from the onscreen controls.PUBG Now playing: Watch this: Aug 31 • Verizon vs AT&T vs T-Mobile vs Sprint: Choose the best 5G carrier Tags Geekbench v.4.0 multicore Black Shark 62,751 Solid battery life even when gamingThe Razer Phone 2 and Black Shark both have a 4,000mAh battery and during our test for continuous video playback on airplane mode, the phones lasted nearly the same amount of time. The Black Shark stayed on for 10 hours and 25 minutes and Razer Phone 2 lasted 10 hours and 31 minutes. It’s worth noting that when I first reviewed the Razer last fall, it only lasted 9 hours and 11 minutes. That impressive extra hour or so is thanks to the Android 9 Pie update. The ROG also has a 4,000mAh battery but lasted even longer in our tests at 13 hours and 40 minutes. I think a lot of that has to do with the phone’s OLED screen, instead of an LCD one like the other three phones. The Red Magic Mars has the smallest battery of the four at 3,800mAh, but managed a time of 14 hours and 7 minutes in our tests. In everyday use, all four phones got through a day on a single charge just fine.Quick Charge supportBlack Shark: Quick Charge 3.0Razer: Quick Charge 4.0+Red Magic Mars: Quick Charge 3.0ROG: Quick Charge 4.0Big speakers equal big soundThe built-in speakers on the Razer and ROG are loud and offer a rich audio experience whether playing a game or watching videos. The Razer also has 24-bit digital-to-analog converter (DAC) via a USB-C dongle. With a good pair of headphones, audio sounded warmer and fuller. Why we didn’t consider the Galaxy S10E and iPhone XRMy priority was comparing phones designed around the gaming experience first and foremost. Would the Samsung Galaxy S10E   or the iPhone XR be an excellent phone for gaming? Absolutely. They both have powerful processors and lots of RAM and are a tad more affordable than their flagship siblings, the iPhone XS and Galaxy S10.But neither is focused solely on the gaming experience and culture. The iPhone offers an interesting predicament because iOS tends to get new games first, and many games remain iOS exclusives. To that end, Apple announced it would offer a gaming subscription service filled with exclusives called Arcade. The platform offers some amazing gaming experiences that were built exclusively for the iPhone. At this point, the service is expected to launch this fall but there’s no word yet on how much the subscription will be. 6GB Same processor but one is fasterAll of these phones use a Snapdragon 845 processor, which is pushed beyond normal speeds for gameplay. For example, the ROG can get a sustained 2.96GHz out of the processor while all the other phones max out at 2.8GHz. For perspective, the Pixel 3 tops out at 2.5GHz.Cooling systems are tkey to a gaming phoneAll of these phones have an internal cooling system to keep things from getting too hot. This is probably the most important aspect of a gaming phone. The Razer Phone 2 and ROG use a vapor chamber cooling system to maximize the area to dissipate heat. The result is that there’s not a specific part of the phone that feels hot to the touch. The ROG also uses a built-in cooling pad and copper heat sink to combat heat. And if that weren’t enough, there’s also a tiny fan that attaches to the back of the ROG that Asus calls the AeroActive Cooler. The Black Shark uses a liquid cooling system. As it gets hotter, special liquid evaporates into gas and collects into cooler areas of the chamber, eventually becoming liquid again. The Red Magic Mars uses a vapor heat sink too, along with four air intakes to keep things cool.As expected, all four phones got warm when I played games, but these cooling systems are all about longevity. I found the ROG with its fan accessory and the Red Magic Mars were the most comfortable to hold for long periods of gameplay.Which gaming phone is the fastest? Each phone has performance enhancement tweaks that keep the phone fast and sustain that speed during extended gameplay. All four phones perform pretty close to each other and all four were plenty fast. But on paper, the Razer ultimately has the edge over the other phones. Best gaming phone & accessory combo 3 Review • Razer Phone 2 review: A powerful gaming phone with a dash of flagship panache In 2019 mobile gamers have access to a wide array of phones to choose from like the Razer Phone 2, Asus ROG, Nubia Red Magic Mars and Xiaomi Black Shark, and it takes a bit of diligence and legwork to find the best gaming phones in the market. The specs on these phones match higher-priced flagships like the Galaxy S10, Pixel 3 and OnePlus 6T, just not the price. Gaming phones are designed especially for gaming with features like superfast processor speeds, advanced cooling systems, gaming-specific controls and displays with a high refresh rate. Interestingly enough, all of these phones run on Android. The iPhone XS and XR gaming phones have a more powerful processor and access to newer and exclusive game titles. But Apple’s phones lack gaming features to make the phones more compelling to play on. And like Android flagships, iPhones are expensive — a baseline iPhone XS starts out at $999.Fortunately for consumers, the four gaming phones reviewed here have prices ranging from $385 to $900: the Razer Phone 2, Asus ROG, Xiaomi Black Shark and Nubia Red Magic Mars. 8,905 See at Nubia Note: Longer bars indicate better performance 128GB Now playing: Watch this: Best gaming phone for the everyday Preview • Razer Phone 2 attempts to fix the first phone’s mistakes, will cost $800 $385 $900 Geekbench v.4.0 single-core See at Amazon But first, some notes on priceAt this time, three of the phones cost under $500. The Razer Phone 2 is a steal right now, especially since its originally retailed for $800. Compared with the other phones, the ROG is the most expensive. For the price of one ROG, you could buy the Red Magic Mars and Black Shark and still have a few bucks left in your pocket.Even if you got an upgraded Black Shark with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, it is still just $425. Also, as of the writing of this review, there are discounts on the Black Shark and Red Magic Mars as new models are expected to be released in the US at the end of May or June.I’m not saying don’t buy the ROG at all (as you will read soon, I highly recommend it). But the phone you’ll buy will most likely depend on your budget.Best overall gaming phone: Asus ROGThe Asus ROG sporting its detachable fan on the back. Josh Miller/CNET The Asus ROG phone (which stands for Republic of Gamers) offers the most power, the best ergonomics and the most thoughtful design. Its 6-inch AMOLED display refreshes 90 times a second — a first for any OLED phone. The higher refresh rate means less motion blur and faster response times. It’s not as high a rate as the Razer Phone 2’s 120Hz LCD screen has, but I still saw a noticeable improvement over other phones when playing games. The phone’s innovative AirTriggers which are pressure-sensitive corners that double as bumper buttons for games, expanding game control beyond the screen. Its dedicated X mode gives you an optimized gaming experience that can be made even more comfortable when using the phone’s detachable fan accessory, which is included in the box. The ROG also has the longest battery life in the group, and has the most gaming accessories that you can buy — though the detachable fan comes included with the phone. The downside is that, at $900, you’re going to pay a lot for these refinements and innovations.Read: CNET’s Asus ROG phone review Razer Phone 2 64GB Black Shark: Sometimes the joystick on the Gamepad 2.0 accessory would send me in the wrong direction. The Razer got hot instantly. At least the game looked gorgeous on the display.Red Magic Mars: The capacitive shoulder buttons helped in certain aspects of the game.ROG: The AirTriggers were nice for gameplay. That ‘gamer look’If you want a gaming phone, it needs to look the part. Angular lines, exposed copper heat sinks, a touch of neon or bright colors are all hallmarks of a gaming phone. The metallic red color of the Red Magic Mars screams for you to pick it up and play.  The ROG phone looks like something Frank Gehry would have designed if he were a gamer. Somewhere underneath all the exposed copper heat sinks, carbon fiber and angular cutouts lies a smartphone. Its different textures and asymmetrical grooves don’t feel like any phone I’ve ever used. An informal poll of friends and coworkers found that people were divided on the look: Half loved it, but half hated it. The Black Shark looks the most like a normal phone. The smooth angled back has a raised area like contour lines on a topographic map — that’s where its lights are hidden.Out of the four, the Razer Phone 2 has the most minimalist design. It has a rectangular shape with right-angled corners and edges. I realize this approach isn’t for everyone, but out of the bunch, I find it the most appealing. The optional Razer Phone 2 wireless charging dock lights up as you charge. Patrick Holland/CNET Does the phone unnecessarily light up?Black Shark: Yes, the logo and four bowtie-looking corners on the back.Razer: Yep, the back Razer logo glows the color of your choosing.Red Magic Mars: Yes, there is a long LED strip on the back.ROG: Yes, the Asus logo on the phone and the detachable fan light up any color you choose.Built-in physical game controlsThree of the phones use buttons and/or capacitive or pressure-sensitive touch to help improve gameplay. The Red Magic Mars and Black Shark phones each have a physical switch that triggers a game mode to organize your games, optimize settings and protect your gaming sessions from interruptions. The Black Shark calls its gaming mode “Shark Space.” Every time I played on the Black Shark I felt inclined to whisper to myself, “Going into Shark Space.”The ROG and Red Magic Mars have faux shoulder buttons that can be mapped to different actions for games like triggering a gun. The ROG also has a second USB-C port on the side, so you keep the phone plugged in while playing it in landscape, though the cable does fall between your hands. The other three phones only charge at the bottom, which made them awkward to hold while gaming and charging at the same time. The Razer Phone 2 is the only phone of the group that doesn’t have a physical feature to improve game controls or ergonomics. After playing games for hours on each phone most of these additions were nice, but didn’t yield enormous improvement when it came to controls. I found that good mobile games should be played with onscreen controls. However, having capacitive touch buttons for playing games originally designed for a console was useful. There is one feature I’d add if I were to design a gaming phone: a joystick. I’d want a thumbstick that could lie flat when not in use and telescope up for gameplay. Imagine something like an iPhone 8, where the home button popped up to be used as a mini joystick. As phones move away from having bezels, foreheads and chins around the screen, my joystick dream doesn’t seem like it could become a reality. But since gaming phones tend to eschew mainstream trends, perhaps it could happen one day. There aren’t a ton of mobile games designed for 120 fps, but the ones that were looked wonderful. And even games designed for lower refresh rates looked good. The only other phone with a high refresh rate is the ROG, which has a 90Hz screen. Like on the Razer, things are sharper and animations are smoother. The Razer Phone 2 has a much brighter screen while the ROG’s OLED display had better colors that were more vibrant. The Red Magic Mars’ screen is the weakest part of the phone. Josh Miller/CNET If you’re looking for a gaming phone that can double as a daily driver, I recommend the Razer Phone 2. It looks the part of a gaming phone, but doubles as a terrific phone to use every day, when you’re not gaming. The Razer Phone 2 is the only phone in the group with IP67 water resistance and wireless charging.Out of the four, I like the Razer Phone 2’s design the most. There are many people who will be turned off by the “monolith from 2001: A Space Odyssey” looks. But the marquee feature on the Razer Phone 2 is its bright 120Hz screen. Whether you’re gaming or not, animations like scrolling pages look supersmooth and graphics are crisp. It has amazingly loud built-in speakers and seems as designed for gamers as it is for anyone who lives on a diet of movies and music. In my initial review the battery wasn’t great, but with the update to Android 9 Pie, the battery life has improved quite a bit. Angela Lang/CNET The Nubia Red Magic Mars is the follow-up to 2018’s Red Magic phone. A Red Magic Mars with 64GB of storage and 6GB of RAM originally cost $399. Now that gets you a model with 128GB of storage and 8GB of RAM.The Red Magic Mars crams in a lot of features like capacitive shoulder buttons, an innovative cooling system and a terrific game mode at a wallet-friendly price. Aside from its custom gaming mode, the phone runs stock Android 9 Pie. Its biggest downside is the screen: It’s just OK, and in that area the Red Magic Mars can’t compete with the Razer and ROG phones. Other than that, the phone is solid. But if you’re interested in grabbing a Red Magic Mars, I’d wait, or at least shop around. First, the Black Shark is often discounted and recently its price has been hovering between $380 and $400.Second, Nubia announced the Red Magic Mars 3 last week. It packs an upgraded Snapdragon 855 processor, a 90Hz OLED screen and an internal fan. These are enormous upgrades. It just launched in China and is expected to hit the US at the end of May. Best of all is the price; a model with 64GB storage and 6GB of RAM will be 2,899 yuan or roughly $430.Read: CNET en Español Nubia Red Magic Mars phone reviewSee at NubiaBest gaming phone with the best accessory: Xiaomi Black Sharkxiaomi-black-shark-gaming-1029The Black Shark with the Gamepad on the left and the Gamepad 2.0 on the right. James Martin/CNET Xiaomi’s Black Shark comes with a Gamepad that slides onto the end of the phone. Having a physical joystick made a huge difference in gaming for me. Unfortunately, it felt lopsided when I used it, so there is a Gamepad 2.0 for $89 that has a more symmetrical design. Similar to the Nintendo Switch, it has a left and right controller that slide and lock onto either end of the phone.Like the Red Magic Mars, the Black Shark runs close to a stock version of Android. It’s Android 8.1 Oreo and not Android 9 Pie, but using the phone’s UI for nongaming stuff felt like using a Pixel 3 when it first came out. There are some downsides though, like the lack of a headphone jack and the very “cheap” plastic feel to the gamepad accessory. At launch the Black Shark cost $499 but you can find it for around $380 these days. In March, Xiaomi announced the Black Shark 2. It includes an updated Snapdragon 855 processor, a touch-sensitive screen similar to Apple’s 3D Touch, an in-display fingerprint reader and mappable onscreen left and right controls. Currently it’s on sale in China for 3,200 yuan, which converts roughly to $475. Rape victim gathers courage to file case

first_imgA garment factory worker along with three of her friends visited Patenga sea beach in Chittagong over the weekend and were returning home by bus.At around 8.30pm, her friends got off the bus, 20 kilometres away from Patenga. She continued on her way to Moulvipukur at Chandgao, about two kilometres away. After dropping off some of the passengers at Baddarhaat, the conductor of the bus closed all the windows and the door of the bus.All on a sudden, he took out a knife and raped her. After that, he took over the steering wheel and the bus driver raped her. The incident took place on 27 October, but wasn’t made public. The victim remained silent for seven days after her rape. After discussing the matter with her family, she finally filed a case against the bus driver and conductor on 3 November with the Chandgao police station. The police arrested the driver Rashedul Islam, 20, and the conductor Imtiaz Uddin, 18, on 4 November. Both of them admitted their crime at the court of Chittagong metropolitan magistrate Nazmul Hossain Chowdhury. On 13 September, a housewife from Lohagora was victim of attempted rape on a running bus. On 25 August, a girl was raped and killed by five transport workers and a conductor at Modhupur in Tangail. The garment worker rape victim told Prothom Alo on Sunday that she works at a factory in Kalurghat of Chittagong city. She was terrified after the incident and remained home for a while. She used to live at her sister’s place in the city. She finally gathered courage to file a case against the rapists. The officer in charge of Chandgao police station said that they could identify the rapists by the description given by the victim. Austria to expel imams shut mosques

first_imgAustrian chancellor Sebastian Kurz File Photo: Reuters.Austria said Friday it could expel up to 60 Turkish-funded imams and their families and shut down seven mosques as part of a crackdown on “political Islam”, triggering fury in Ankara.”The circle of people possibly affected by these measures – the pool that we’re talking about – comprises around 60 imams,” said Herbert Kickl of the far-right Freedom Party (FPOe), the junior partner in Austria’s coalition government. In total 150 people risked losing their right to residence, he said at a press conference in Vienna.Ankara quickly denounced the move.”Austria’s decision to close down seven mosques and deport imams with a lame excuse is a reflection of the anti-Islam, racist and discriminatory populist wave in this country”, presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin said on Twitter.Seven mosques will also be shut after an investigation by the religious affairs authority into images which emerged in April of children in a Turkish-backed mosque playing dead and reenacting the World War I battle of Gallipoli.”Parallel societies, political Islam and radicalisation have no place in our country,” Chancellor Sebastian Kurz of the ruling centre-right People’s Party said.In several cases the process of expelling imams connected to the Turkish-Islamic Cultural Associations (ATIB) organisation was underway, Kickl said. The interior minister added that the government suspects them of contravening a ban on foreign funding of religious office holders. ATIB is a branch of Turkey’s religious affairs agency Diyanet. The photos of children, published by the Falter weekly, showed the young boys in camouflage uniforms marching, saluting, waving Turkish flags and then playing dead.Their “corpses” were then lined up and draped in the flags. The mosque in question was run by ATIB.ATIB itself condemned the photos at the time, calling the “highly regrettable” event and said that “called off before it had even ended”.Turkey’s relations with Austria have long been strained, with Kurz calling on the European Union to break off negotiations on Ankara joining the bloc.Last week Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan attacked Kurz, saying: “This immoral chancellor has a problem with us”.”He’s throwing his weight around and making a scene,” Erdogan went on.Both Kurz, of the centre-right People’s Party (OeVP) and the FPOe made immigration and integration major themes in their election campaigns last year.In Friday’s press conference Kurz was keen to emphasise that the action was being taken under legislation to regulate Islamic associations that he himself brought in as a minister in the previous government.last_img read more

UPDATE Train Carrying GOP Lawmakers Strikes Trash Truck 1 Killed

first_imgThank you to everyone who has reached out about the accident with the train carrying members to the GOP Retreat. I am safe. First responders are on the scene.— John Ratcliffe (@RepRatcliffe) January 31, 2018 Listen Raw video from the scene of collision involving truck and train carrying members of Congress. https://t.co/E2lNEmJh7p pic.twitter.com/nWCSzhnu0F— Dan Linden (@DanLinden) January 31, 2018Florida Rep. Neal Dunn, a former Army surgeon, said he and other lawmakers who are doctors joined other passengers who are nurses or paramedics and jumped out with the basic medical gear they had. They broke into three teams to help the injured people in the truck, he said.“The first gentleman was somebody who had really, really, really devastating injuries. We did try to resuscitate, but ultimately you had to realize it wasn’t possible,” Dunn said. He said another man in the truck was critically injured and a third was seriously hurt.Sen. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana and his wife, both doctors, were among those who came to the rescue. He said he helped a man from the truck who was badly injured.“My role was quite simple: I picked up his feet so the blood in his feet would go to his heart and his brain,” Cassidy said.Officials gave varying figures on the number hurt. But Amtrak said two crew members and three passengers were taken to a hospital with minor injuries.Minnesota Rep. Jason Lewis’ staff tweeted that the first-term congressman was among those taken to the hospital and was being checked for a possible concussion. Others aboard the train reported bumps, bruises and sore joints. The GOP policy retreat, an annual event, was scheduled to last three days and feature speeches from President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence. By early afternoon, lawmakers were boarding buses to resume their trip, and Pence was still planning to address them later Wednesday.Rep. James Comer of Kentucky said about 100 Republican lawmakers were on the train when the crash made him jump out of his seat.“I looked out the side of the window and then I could see a truck, just in pieces out the side of the window,” Comer said. He said Capitol police officers quickly jumped off the train but came back and asked for any doctors to help.Other doctor-lawmakers who assisted included Reps. Michael Burgess of Texas, Phil Roe of Tennessee, Larry Bucshon of Indiana and Roger Marshall of Kansas, according to those aboard.House Speaker Paul Ryan of Wisconsin was on the train and was unhurt, aides said.(Correction: US Congressman Randy Weber was not on the train that crashed)  X Along with my colleagues, I was on the train that hit the truck in West Virginia. I’m okay, but my thoughts and prayers are with those who are injured and their families. Thank you to the first responders who were on the scene.— Michael McCaul (@RepMcCaul) January 31, 2018 We’re fine, but our train hit a garbage truck. Members with medical training are assisting the drivers of the truck. pic.twitter.com/0I9jOwHTmb— Rep. We have no other firsthand information at this time. – Kimberly Willingham— Louie Gohmert (@replouiegohmert) January 31, 2018 My wife and I are safe. Thank you to all who reached out to me. Please keep in your prayers any others involved who have been injured.— John Culberson (@CongCulberson) January 31, 2018 Roxanne and I were on the train, but are okay. Please pray for those injured in the truck that was on the tracks. They need it.— Brian Babin (@RepBrianBabin) January 31, 2018 Karen, my staff members, and I are all on the train to the GOP conference and we are all safe.— Pete Sessions (@PeteSessions) January 31, 2018 – / 2A train carrying dozens of Republican members of Congress to a strategy retreat in the countryside slammed into a garbage truck in rural Virginia on Wednesday, killing one person in the vehicle and sending several lawmaker-doctors rushing to help the injured. No serious injuries were reported aboard the chartered Amtrak train, which set out from the nation’s capital with lawmakers, family members and staff for the luxury Greenbrier resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. At least two other people in the truck were reported seriously hurt.Texas lawmakers aboard the train include, Ted Cruz, John Culberson, Michael McCaul, Louie Gohmert, Brian Babin, John Ratcliffe, Pete Sessions, and Roger Williams.Houston area Rep. John Culberson called in live to Houston Matters, and spoke with Craig Cohen, about the train crash: Thanks to all who have showed concern, I am just fine. Please keep in your prayers any others involved in the collision who have been injured.— Ted Cruz (@tedcruz) January 31, 2018 I am on the train and I am OK. We don’t know many details, but security and doctors are here to secure the scene and help those who are injured https://t.co/SLx1GeHmsW— Rep. Roger Williams (@RepRWilliams) January 31, 2018The collision happened around 11:20 a.m. in Crozet, about 125 miles southwest of Washington, tearing the truck in two, crumpling the nose of the locomotive and scattering trash alongside the tracks.Rep. Robert Pittenger of North Carolina said he was standing at the train’s refreshment stand, waiting to be served a soft drink, when he felt “an enormous slam. … It was a huge jolt. We all hung on to whatever we had.”He said he looked out the window and saw a big pile of garbage, and it appeared the train had pushed the truck for a few hundred yards.Authorities gave no details on the cause of the wreck, which took place at a crossing protected by gates, flashing lights, bells and warning signs. The National Transportation Safety Board sent a team to investigate.Benny Layne, on whose property the truck landed, said the crossing arms had been known to malfunction often, sometimes not working when a train was approaching, sometimes coming down for no reason. Sometimes, he said, they stayed down for hours.“A guy was up here just yesterday or the day before taking a look at them,” he said.Carrie Brown, human resources manager at Buckingham Branch Railroad, which leases the stretch of track and is responsible for maintenance, said she was unaware of any problems with equipment at the crossing. There were 3 people in the truck that was straddling the track and which the train hit. One is dead. One I am told is being transported but has minor injuries. One has serious injuries—please pray. Laura & I & multiple other physicians tended to the patients until EMTs showed up. https://t.co/qAmoofxakV— Bill Cassidy (@BillCassidy) January 31, 2018 To embed this piece of audio in your site, please use this code: 00:00 /04:53 Sharelast_img read more

Rice Investigates Professor Involved In Controversial Gene Editing Research

first_img To embed this piece of audio in your site, please use this code: 00:00 /09:00 X Rice University is investigating reports that one of their professors assisted in a project that used a new gene-editing technique to make genetically edited human babies. On Monday, He Jiankui of the Southern University of Science and Technology in China announced he had used human embryos modified with a particular gene-editing technique to create twin girls. The children’s father is HIV-positive, and He says his team altered the DNA of the twin girls to protect them from HIV. Dr. Michael Deem, a professor of bioengineering at Rice, was also involved in the work, the Associated Press reported.“Rice had no knowledge of this work. To Rice’s knowledge, none of the clinical work was performed in the United States,” the university said in a statement sent to Houston Matters. “Regardless of where it was conducted, this work as described in press reports, violates scientific conduct guidelines and is inconsistent with ethical norms of the scientific community and Rice University. We have begun a full investigation of Dr. Deem’s involvement in this research.”Gene editing rewrites DNA, and has only recently been tested in adults to treat serious diseases. However, editing eggs, sperm or embryos is different because it makes permanent changes that can pass to future generations, and the risks are still unknown. While there is no current international regulation regarding gene editing, it has been banned in the U.S.The Ethical DilemmaSince He’s research hasn’t been published in a scientific journal or vetted by other scientists, many in the scientific community responded with shock and anger to He’s claim. Dr. Janet Malek, associate professor of medicine and medical ethics at Baylor College of Medicine’s Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy, told Houston Matters she believes one of the main reasons the medical community is upset about the announcement is that the safety and efficacy of gene editing hasn’t been proven yet.“The technology that they’re using is not yet developed enough to be able to reliably edit genes in the way that we would like them to,” Malek said. “So there’s that scientific barrier that really hasn’t been reached yet to a point that we would feel comfortable using it in human embryos that we intend to bring into being as people.”There could also be unforeseen consequences of gene editing, Rebecca Lunstroth, medical ethicist and associate director for the McGovern Center for Humanities & Ethics at UT Health, told Houston Matters.“For example, a terrible genetic disease is sickle cell anemia, but sickle cell is also protective for malaria,” Lunstroth said. “What we don’t know is if we start playing around with these genes, while we are solving one problem, we could be causing many others that we don’t know yet.”Beyond the need for further research, the concept of gene editing also raises ethical concerns.“The ethical issues are really what disease do we tackle, or which diseases, and then the fear is that we get into enhancement,” Lunstroth said. “It’s one thing to eradicate a disease, it’s another thing to enhance our offspring, and who makes that decision?”center_img Mark Schiefelbein/APHe Jiankui speaks during an interview at a laboratory in Shenzhen Listen Sharelast_img read more
