Dan Cohen AUTHOR Wireless communications coverage is limited at some installations, including rural bases and some larger ones, according to language in the committee report accompanying the fiscal 2019 defense authorization bill approved last week by the House. At some larger installations, communications infrastructure outside the fence line is unable to provide consistent or optimal service to portions of the base. To monitor the various approaches the services are pursuing to improve wireless communications capabilities on installations, the House Armed Services Committee directs the service secretaries to brief it by Sept. 30 on their departments’ requirements, plans and timelines for improving coverage. The Navy is considering using real estate agreements, such as easements and enhanced use leases, to allow commercial industry to develop communications infrastructure on its installations to improve service and connectivity, according to the report. The Army and the Air Force also want to improve wireless capabilities on their bases but may be considering a different tack than the Navy.“The committee believes that wireless communications coverage on military installations not only provide valuable support for the quality of life for service members and their families, but also can support military requirements related to force protection, logistics, training or operations,” the report states.

How artificial intelligence is transforming the stock market Close The business impact of Artifical Intelligence (AI) and robotics is rising by the day, and these frontier techs are fast reshaping industries and providing better and faster services. Industries depend on AI to mine data accumulated for years, helping unravel disruptive technological breakthroughs. IB Times caught up with home-grown robotics and AI luminaries to find out how Budget 2018 can help boost this sector.Several recent reports said India and Japan will work together to introduce AI and robotics in the defence sector. This would equip India’s armed forces with a host of robots that can work as a part of any team much like the soldiers.Besides services, industry and defence sectors, even road construction companies have started using robots. The roads ministry expects that the introduction of robots will help it to cut down on labour costs and prevent the loss of human lives. As the demand for AI and robotics is increasing across key sectors, it’s necessary that the government has a plan for the AI and Robotics industry in the upcoming budget.AI and robotics industry experts in India shared with IBTimes India their expectations from the Union Budget 2018, which Finance Minister Arun Jaitley will present on February 1. Expectations from GreyOrange: GreyOrange is a leading warehouse automation provider. They have products like warehouse automation robots and intelligent warehouse control system. Samay Kohli, the Group Chief Executive Officer, expects the following from the budget:The government could focus on formulating a comprehensive policy to support the growth of AI R&D (Research and Development) and development in India, so that it should be able to reap the benefits of AI business at a later stage as it did in the case of IT industryIn order to promote further “Make in India” policy, government could create special manufacturing parks for new technology manufacturing companies and surrounding ecosystem. Companies established under these areas could be eligible for criteria based “tax and capital” incentive. We look for Tax incentives to encourage expenditure on R&D along with easy access to working capital funding from banks at competitive rates for companies fulfilling Make in India initiative.Extension of sun set clause for section 35(2AB) to encourage investment in R&D which will help in reduction in foreign outflow on technical know-how, and also in generating forex through supply of Indian products, resulting in reduction in imported goods and increase in employment. With the government’s focus on Make in India, and considering GreyOrange manufactures in India and exports Robotics products worldwide, government could lower the import duties on raw materials (Eg. Battery, Chargers, Gearbox etc.)Since the development of technologies is a key factor in the growth and promotion of companies like GreyOrange, it is very important that a few of the very critical key components should be developed and manufactured in India. One of such critical components is “chip” development and manufacturing as it is an essential component for most technology products nowadays especially for AI products. The government should use all its possible resources to set up chip manufacturing facilities in India as it will create an essential manufacturing eco-system and will reduce substantial dependencies on other countries, specifically China, for import of such a critical component. In order to promote home-grown AI and technologies companies, the government could try to give some leverage on the eligibility criteria for including/selecting such companies in government projects.Expectations from Niki.ai: Niki.ai is an AI start-up headquartered in Bangalore. Sachin Jaiswal, the CEO, expects the following from the government:In India specifically, we believe that the government should put efforts in 2018 towards building AI-related training and awareness programmes for end-consumers and potential employees alike.Conversation platform, as an interface, resonates really well with the Indian smartphone and internet users who spend most of their time on messaging apps like Whatsapp, irrespective of the geographies and demographies they fall under. Eradicating the interface acting as a frictional element, it can definitely help push more people towards transacting online, and hence help achieve true digitisation in the country, thus having an overall positive impact on the economy. Similarly, building great AI-based platforms needs great talent. AI being one of the less explored areas in our country, there is a dearth of talent. Better infrastructure and training programmes related to AI technologies being included in mainstream courses to facilitate skill building will be a great initiative from the government. Better investment in AI and effective human-machine collaboration can help businesses boost revenues by huge margins, new reports say.Creative CommonsExpectations from CloudSEK: CloudSEK is an AI-based threat intelligence company. Rahul Sasi, the Chief Technical Officer of the company, shares his expectations:There is a popular belief among the AI communities that, those who control artificial intelligence will be the global power. Countries like US, UK and China have already started allocating funds for AI/Robotics research.Hence it is very important that our government allocates necessary funds for AI/Robotics research. Companies like Google have already decided to establish their AI research facility in China. So, it’s high time for the government to act and bring these opportunities to India as well. By MESFIN FEKADU AP Entertainment WriterNEW YORK (AP) — Jennifer Pinckney was hiding under a desk holding the mouth of her then-6-year-old daughter when Dylann Roof fired more than 70 shots in Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina, killing nine black worshippers. The new documentary, “Emanuel,” explores life after the tragic shooting on June 17, 2015, as family members, friends and the community try to heal through faith and forgiveness. In this June 24, 2015, file photo Sen. Clementa Pinckney, was one of the nine killed by Roof, who sat through 45 minutes of Bible study at the church before firing shots. Pinckney and her daughter, Malana, were in the reverend’s office when they heard gun shots in another room.“It brings it all back for me,” Pinckney said of watching “Emanuel,” which opens in theaters nationwide for a limited run on Monday and Wednesday . Oscar winner Viola Davis and NBA star Steph Curry are executive producers.“It’s emotional. I can’t help but to relive what happened.”Roof was convicted of federal hate-crime and obstruction-of-religion charges and sentenced to death. Before the attack, the then-21-year-old had told a friend that he intended to kill people at the historic black church to start a race war. (AP Photo/Stephen B. Morton, File)Pinckney said she hopes the film, directed by Brian Ivie, “kind of opens people’s eyes.”“It’s like an awareness,” she said. “We have to get to that point where we start respecting, and showing more love and more care, and coming together, (and) becoming one unity.”At a bond hearing days after the attack, some of the victims’ family members offered Roof forgiveness and said they were praying for him, even as they described the pain of their losses. Emmy-winning actress Mariska Hargitay, a co-producer of “Emanuel,” was touched when she saw the way the family members reacted.“We’re all fascinated by people who can do things that we can’t do. I’m watching a movie (where) a group of people were loving at the highest level. You feel like these people are shamans and possessed something deeply extra, and the extra was indeed grace for me,” Hargitay said.“Like everyone does in seeing a movie like this, it goes straight to the core and straight to our souls,” she said. “I experienced deep outrage and sorrow and anger and all that for those we lost. I also experienced hope.”The shooter killed six women and three men. Eight died at the scene, while the ninth, Daniel Simmons, died at the hospital. Then-U.S. President Barack Obama delivered the eulogy at the Rev. Clementa Pinckney’s funeral and led the singing of “Amazing Grace.”Jennifer Pinckney said thanks to counseling and prayer, she and Malana, now 10, are doing OK. She also has a 15-year-old daughter. But Pinckney, like many other family and friends of those who died, said it’s hard moving on with life after losing loved ones.“We’ve already started college tours and stuff like that — kind of difficult just to think on that level, but also to think this is something that we’re doing that Clementa’s not sharing,” she said. “That he’s not physically with us.”Despite her own grief and loss, she hopes the community can continue to come together.“You have to learn to respect each other’s differences. No two people are alike,” she said. “That’s something that I hope people will get from this (film) — to love more and get right with God.”
(PhysOrg.com) — Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT) has demonstrated what might be the next version of high speed WiFi. Currently named 802.11ac, (wireless transmission traditionally uses .11 as opposed to .3 for Ethernet, or cable based transmission) the new proposed standard was shown to deliver 120Mbps throughput to three receivers at the same time. Citation: NTT demos 802.11ac – next generation high-speed WiFi (2011, July 11) retrieved 18 August 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2011-07-ntt-demos-80211ac-high-speed.html Explore further This document is subject to copyright. Apart from any fair dealing for the purpose of private study or research, no part may be reproduced without the written permission. The content is provided for information purposes only. The new standard uses the same 5GHz bandwidth as is currently used now in home WiFi systems; to get it to carry more data, the signal is multiplexed (sent out as round-robin bits of data from several different sources) on one end, and then de-multiplexed on the other, all using multiple-user Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) technology that in this case has been developed by NTT. The object is to get 1 Gbps per system, a rate that will be needed as bandwidth hogging applications such as ever higher video resolution or 3D content creates demand for ever faster LAN systems able to deliver such huge amounts of data to always hungry-for-more, customers. In the NTT demo at the Wireless Technology Park, in Yokohama, six antennas were used to deliver the signal, and three to receive it. The new technology developed by NTT relies on a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) that utilizes mathematical algorithms to set space divisions for the data as its being multiplexed into its individual parts, and then of course to do the reverse on the other end. According to NTT, this processing could be done with a dedicated chip, instead of the FPGA, should the new standard be approved by the International IEEE standards body.Even if all goes according to plan, though, the new standard isn’t likely to be adopted until at least 2013, though that doesn’t necessarily mean products won’t ship before that date that utilize the proposed new standard, as was done with earlier wireless standards. Also helpful is the fact that 802.11ac, whatever its final form, will offer full backwards compatibility with the current version, meaning early adopters won’t do any worse than what they have now, and likely will do much better as new hardware comes available.Looking ahead past 802.11ac, the next generation of wireless LAN technology, initially dubbed 802.11ag is expected to step outside of the 5GHz currently unlicensed space, and to shoot for a tenfold gain in throughput. © 2010 PhysOrg.com NTT DoCoMo Achieves World’s First 5Gbps Packet Transmission in 4G Field Experiment

Free Webinar | Sept. 9: The Entrepreneur’s Playbook for Going Global 4 min read When the time comes to expand your retail business, how will you know? Some shop owners decide purely on gut feeling. Some people decide based on excess cash-flow. Forward-thinking retailers decide because they see the signs in the data.As cloud technology has become affordable and accessible to small retailers, now they can take advantage of store data – like foot-traffic converting into sales – that illuminates opportunities for growth from one store to many. But data isn’t just a way of making big decisions like whether or not it’s time to open a new store. Data is your growth medium from the first day you decide to start up a retail business. It’s the stuff the future’s made of.Related:This Slick iBeacon Device Helps Retailers Push Deals to In-Store ShoppersHowever, you don’t need big data to do something useful. All you need is a collection of your own “small data,” used wisely. Here are four types of data you’ll learn to love if you want to build a successful retail business:1. In-store presence data. With the right technology, you can measure everything from foot traffic to in-store dwell time to the areas most visited on the shop floor. Integrate that information with your point-of-sale data and customer data to understand how people shop, including conversion rates and market segment behavior variations. For example, If checkout times are long and abandonment is high, then you know you need to speed up the checkout process or staff up during peak hours. If customers linger longer in the footwear aisles then the lingerie department, but buy more lingerie than footwear, you may want to investigate their reasons and rethink how you are using your space.2. Inventory data. If you peek inside your customers’ shopping baskets, you can learn a lot about what they are buying most. Comparing that to your inventory and cost of goods sold will help you tweak your retail operations to encourage growth. Seasonal fluctuations in purchases and items bought can help you determine when to create new advertising, in-store layouts, web pages or special offers.Related: The Future of Retail: 6 Ways the Cloud Will Reinvent the Sales FloorSan Francisco-based handmade tea retailer, T-We Tea, used inventory data about the cost of goods sold to identify which of their best-selling teas had the highest margins. In order to maximize profits, T-We purchased higher volumes of those teas in order to increase economies of scale. From there, T-We was able to bundle their most popular products together with those same highest margin products, sell at a discounted rate, but still increase profits. These simple but important tweaks grew revenues by 300 percent and helped them expand to a larger location.3. Financial data. Financial data is vital to learning how your cash flow and profits are doing and what patterns they tend to follow. There are plenty of tools on the market that can do this for you, at little to no cost (No need to hire an expensive accountant to tell you how you are doing).Plug your POS system into your accounts so you take control of your day-to-day business finances. Services such as QuickBooks Online integrate with POS systems, allowing you to automatically capture real-time financial data and run analytical reports that give you deep insight your business and let you forecast for growth.4. Customer data. Customer insight helps you grow your brand’s influence and appeal. If you want loyal customers to make repeat purchases and recommend your store to their friends, then you need to listen to your customer data.Working with a company like PayPal, retailers can empower their customers to “check-in” when they arrive, showing the retailer the customer’s photo and buying history. With this kind of insight, you can personalize the customer experience based on their purchase history. These four pillars of data are key to understanding the performance of your company. When you can see what’s going right and what’s going wrong, you’ll make smarter decisions that steer the company in the right direction, creating net improvement all the time.Related: 8 Ways Retailers Should Target Smartphone Users August 6, 2014 Growing a business sometimes requires thinking outside the box.
