Triumph and Williams are teaming up on future electric motorcycles

first_imgEnlarge ImageIf Triumph has its way, in a few years it will be able to sell you electric versions of your favorite Triumph models. Triumph Electric motorcycles are becoming increasingly “a thing” and you know that’s the case when legacy brands like Harley-Davidson are getting in on it. Now, though, a new player is entering the game, and it’s Triumph.Yeah, that Triumph that makes scramblers and Bonnevilles and Rockets and Tigers. It announced on Wednesday that it was initiating a program that it’s calling “TE-1,” which will focus on the development of compact battery-electric drivetrain options for future motorcycle models. Here’s the part that will turn your brain into a hot little coal: Triumph is teaming up with Williams to get this project going. Yes, that Williams. The famed Formula One engineering firm, the same company that helped Singer get its Dynamics and Lightweighting Study cars off the ground.”This new collaboration represents an exciting opportunity for Triumph and its partners to be leaders in the technology that will enable the electrification of motorcycles,” said Triumph CEO Nick Bloor in a statement. “Project Triumph TE-1 is one part of our electric motorcycle strategy, focused on delivering what riders want and expect from their Triumph, which is the perfect balance of handling, performance and usability.”Based on Bloor’s statement, we’d expect that Triumph’s path toward electrification will differ significantly from, say, Harley-Davidson’s. Where H-D is offering one electric motorcycle — the Livewire — with a stratospheric price tag and then plans to offer two other models that are more akin to scooters or electric bicycles than they are motorcycles, Triumph will offer no-compromise electric versions of its ICE models.”The team at Williams Advanced Engineering is looking forward to applying our expertise in the electrification of transport with our partners,” said Craig Wilson, managing director of Williams Advanced Engineering, in a statement.  “Williams has powered a number of world-renowned electric vehicles already and this will be a significant further step in our work by taking that knowledge onto two wheels.”Now, historically, when a company like Triumph would announce something as grand as Project Triumph TE-1, we’d have viewed it with a great deal of skepticism. Triumph, in particular, has had a checkered financial past, and developing new tech is expensive. Now, though, Triumph is at the top of its game, and its models are among the best in the industry. We’re genuinely excited to see how this turns out. 2020 BMW 330e first drive: A plug-in 3 Series without compromise Motorcycles Electric Cars Tags 2020 Harley-Davidson LiveWire first ride: Harley’s electric future is bright Share your voice Harley-Davidson’s LiveWire is the sporty electric streetbike we need Post a comment Triumph 47 Photos More From Roadshow 2020 Volvo XC60 T8 Polestar Engineered first drive: Almost Super Trouper 0last_img read more

BuzzFeed’s national news and national security teams broke some major stories on the Trump administration, Russia’s use of social media to shift public opinions in the United States, and other important subjects. Popular on Variety center_img Layoffs are often baffling but the choice to close the entire national desk at Buzzfeed is very baffling to me. Some of the best and most distinctive stuff came out of there.— Elise Foley (@elisefoley) January 25, 2019BuzzFeed wasn’t the only news organization affected by layoffs this week. The Huffington Post also laid off a number of writers Thursday, one day after corporate parent Verizon had announced plans to lay off 800 in its media division. Gannett, owner of newspapers like the Arizona Republic and the Knoxville News Sentinel, laid off writers across the country. And digital sports publication the Player’s Tribune reportedly laid off 12-15 staffers. BuzzFeed also closed its international office in Spain, and may hand down further layoffs to writers in the U.K. on Monday. There were also reports of layoffs affecting the BuzzFeed News art department and other parts of the newsroom. Other departments within the company are scheduled to hear about layoffs early next week.BuzzFeed announced Thursday that it was going to lay off 15% of its workforce across the company, or around 220 staffers of its total workforce of close to 1,500. A BuzzFeed spokesperson didn’t immediately respond to a question about the number of staffers laid off in the news division Friday.CEO Jonah Peretti painted the layoffs as a necessary step to “focus on content that is working” in a company-wide memo. Peretti went on to say that “the restructuring (…) will reduce our costs and improve our operating model so we can thrive and control our own destiny, without ever needing to raise funding again.”last_img read more
