Electricity tariff in Karnataka hiked by 33 paise per unit

first_imgThe electricity bills will get more expensive in Karnataka as the Karnataka Electric Regulatory Commission (KERC) has once again increased a hike of 33 paise per unit in the tariff.KERC chairman Shambhu Dayal Meena said that the five electricity supply companies (Escoms) had proposed an average hike of Rs 1.20 per unit (17.37 per cent) for all the consumer categories. But the commission allowed an increase of 33 paise per unit (4.8 per cent).Meena said that the hike has been entailed due to a 16 per cent increase in power purchase cost, 20 per cent increase in operation and management costs, 12 per cent increase in interest and finance charges, 22 per cent increase in depreciation and other pending deficits amounting to over Rs 2,000 crores. The KERC also said that it was encouraging Time of Day tariff, when the tariff will see a hike of Rs 1 per unit during peak hours, both in the morning and evening. The consumers who utilise power during non-peak hours will be eligible for a subsidy ranging from Rs 1 to Rs 2 per unit, reports The Hindu.According to reports, the commission has also reduced the number of slabs in the urban and rural areas, with an increase of 25 paise. So, a BESCOM consumer in urban areas will pay Rs 3.75 per unit instead of Rs 3.50 for the usage of 30 units. And electricity consumption beyond 30 units will attract a higher slab rate. The urban areas will have to pay an additional 5 paise as per the hiked rates of BESCOM when compared to the rural areas as Bescom consumers will pay Rs 3.65/unit for the first slab, whereas other Escoms will charge Rs 3.35/unit to Rs 3.60/unit in the rural areas.last_img read more

Austria to expel imams shut mosques

first_imgAustrian chancellor Sebastian Kurz File Photo: Reuters.Austria said Friday it could expel up to 60 Turkish-funded imams and their families and shut down seven mosques as part of a crackdown on “political Islam”, triggering fury in Ankara.”The circle of people possibly affected by these measures – the pool that we’re talking about – comprises around 60 imams,” said Herbert Kickl of the far-right Freedom Party (FPOe), the junior partner in Austria’s coalition government. In total 150 people risked losing their right to residence, he said at a press conference in Vienna.Ankara quickly denounced the move.”Austria’s decision to close down seven mosques and deport imams with a lame excuse is a reflection of the anti-Islam, racist and discriminatory populist wave in this country”, presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin said on Twitter.Seven mosques will also be shut after an investigation by the religious affairs authority into images which emerged in April of children in a Turkish-backed mosque playing dead and reenacting the World War I battle of Gallipoli.”Parallel societies, political Islam and radicalisation have no place in our country,” Chancellor Sebastian Kurz of the ruling centre-right People’s Party said.In several cases the process of expelling imams connected to the Turkish-Islamic Cultural Associations (ATIB) organisation was underway, Kickl said. The interior minister added that the government suspects them of contravening a ban on foreign funding of religious office holders. ATIB is a branch of Turkey’s religious affairs agency Diyanet. The photos of children, published by the Falter weekly, showed the young boys in camouflage uniforms marching, saluting, waving Turkish flags and then playing dead.Their “corpses” were then lined up and draped in the flags. The mosque in question was run by ATIB.ATIB itself condemned the photos at the time, calling the “highly regrettable” event and said that “called off before it had even ended”.Turkey’s relations with Austria have long been strained, with Kurz calling on the European Union to break off negotiations on Ankara joining the bloc.Last week Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan attacked Kurz, saying: “This immoral chancellor has a problem with us”.”He’s throwing his weight around and making a scene,” Erdogan went on.Both Kurz, of the centre-right People’s Party (OeVP) and the FPOe made immigration and integration major themes in their election campaigns last year.In Friday’s press conference Kurz was keen to emphasise that the action was being taken under legislation to regulate Islamic associations that he himself brought in as a minister in the previous government.last_img read more

According to sources, Mitra on Sunday visited the polling booths one after another and around 12 pm while he was present at Kankinara High School, he saw that Central Force personnel were not checking the identity of the persons entering the polling booths. When he reportedly asked the jawans why was this happening, a heated exchange broke out. Significantly in the Bhatpara by-election, BJP leader Arjun Singh’s son Pawan is contesting against Mitra. “Several persons could be seen entering polling premises wearing half pants. No police personnel or Central Force jawans were seen doing their duties. When I asked them about why they were not checking the identities of the voters, I was confronted,” said Mitra. Sources informed that after visiting Kankinara High School, when Mitra was on his way to another booth at Kantapukur area, several miscreants allegedly backed by the BJP hurled bombs targeting his car. But no harm was done as he immediately turned his car and left the area. Later, a Trinamool party office was allegedly set on fire by the BJP workers. Those jobless people have joined the BJP and are working as musclemen for the saffron party. In the afternoon at around 4 pm, Arjun went to the spot and alleged that Mitra was trying to create problems in the area. Condemning the violence in Kankinara, Trinamool spokesperson Derek O’Brien issued a media statement where he also alleged that the Central Forces are doing as they have been instructed by the BJP. In the statement he said: “Central forces, taking orders from BJP, mercilessly beating up citizens and Trinamool workers. Bombs hurled, open fire on citizens. BJP is resorting to high level of violence in the Bhatpara Assembly by-poll. This is dangerous for democracy. Goons of Arjun Singh have hurled bombs and even attacked the Trinamool candidate Madan Mitra.”last_img read more

4 Sturdy Pillars of Data for Growing Your Small Retail Business

first_img Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. Free Webinar | Sept. 9: The Entrepreneur’s Playbook for Going Global 4 min read When the time comes to expand your retail business, how will you know? Some shop owners decide purely on gut feeling. Some people decide based on excess cash-flow. Forward-thinking retailers decide because they see the signs in the data.As cloud technology has become affordable and accessible to small retailers, now they can take advantage of store data – like foot-traffic converting into sales – that illuminates opportunities for growth from one store to many. But data isn’t just a way of making big decisions like whether or not it’s time to open a new store. Data is your growth medium from the first day you decide to start up a retail business. It’s the stuff the future’s made of.Related:This Slick iBeacon Device Helps Retailers Push Deals to In-Store ShoppersHowever, you don’t need big data to do something useful. All you need is a collection of your own “small data,” used wisely. Here are four types of data you’ll learn to love if you want to build a successful retail business:1. In-store presence data. With the right technology, you can measure everything from foot traffic to in-store dwell time to the areas most visited on the shop floor. Integrate that information with your point-of-sale data and customer data to understand how people shop, including conversion rates and market segment behavior variations. For example, If checkout times are long and abandonment is high, then you know you need to speed up the checkout process or staff up during peak hours. If customers linger longer in the footwear aisles then the lingerie department, but buy more lingerie than footwear, you may want to investigate their reasons and rethink how you are using your space.2. Inventory data. If you peek inside your customers’ shopping baskets, you can learn a lot about what they are buying most. Comparing that to your inventory and cost of goods sold will help you tweak your retail operations to encourage growth. Seasonal fluctuations in purchases and items bought can help you determine when to create new advertising, in-store layouts, web pages or special offers.Related: The Future of Retail: 6 Ways the Cloud Will Reinvent the Sales FloorSan Francisco-based handmade tea retailer, T-We Tea, used inventory data about the cost of goods sold to identify which of their best-selling teas had the highest margins. In order to maximize profits, T-We purchased higher volumes of those teas in order to increase economies of scale. From there, T-We was able to bundle their most popular products together with those same highest margin products, sell at a discounted rate, but still increase profits. These simple but important tweaks grew revenues by 300 percent and helped them expand to a larger location.3. Financial data. Financial data is vital to learning how your cash flow and profits are doing and what patterns they tend to follow. There are plenty of tools on the market that can do this for you, at little to no cost (No need to hire an expensive accountant to tell you how you are doing).Plug your POS system into your accounts so you take control of your day-to-day business finances. Services such as QuickBooks Online integrate with POS systems, allowing you to automatically capture real-time financial data and run analytical reports that give you deep insight your business and let you forecast for growth.4. Customer data. Customer insight helps you grow your brand’s influence and appeal. If you want loyal customers to make repeat purchases and recommend your store to their friends, then you need to listen to your customer data.Working with a company like PayPal, retailers can empower their customers to “check-in” when they arrive, showing the retailer the customer’s photo and buying history. With this kind of insight, you can personalize the customer experience based on their purchase history. These four pillars of data are key to understanding the performance of your company. When you can see what’s going right and what’s going wrong, you’ll make smarter decisions that steer the company in the right direction, creating net improvement all the time.Related: 8 Ways Retailers Should Target Smartphone Users August 6, 2014 Growing a business sometimes requires thinking outside the box. Marijuana Workers Now Outnumber Bakers and Other Common Careers

first_img Next Article Add to Queue –shares For an industry still in its early stages, legal marijuana already has surpassed many other businesses in generating jobs.In a new report called the Marijuana Business Factbook 2017, the marijuana industry is reported to have created 165,000 to 230,000 full- and part-time jobs in the United States. According to the report, that means there are more people working in the marijuana industry than there are bakers, dental hygienists and massage therapists. The job numbers include those working at cannabis retail stores, growing facilities, marijuana-infused product companies, testing labs and ancillary businesses such as transportation and security. The numbers represent “marijuana’s rapid transformation out of the black market and into a viable economic force,” according to the report.Related: Sorry, But No You Can’t Smoke Marijuana on the Las Vegas Strip Yet.Practical mattersThe numbers also underscore one of the two practical considerations for political leaders that go beyond the decades-old “war against drugs” debate that continues at the federal level. The first is that legalized marijuana generates huge amounts of tax income for state and local governments. For example, Oregon expects to reap $200 million in adult-use marijuana taxes by 2019, and that money will go to schools, roads and law enforcement. The tax dollars generated by Colorado and other western states have politicians in other cash-starved states, such as Illinois, hoping to legalize marijuana to help balance governmental budgets. The second, which the report focused on, is job creation. Nationwide, the numbers are expected to skyrocket as California, Massachusetts and Nevada allow adult-use sales and another big state, Florida, moves forward with a regulated medical marijuana industry.Though all the new legal marijuana markets will take time to fully develop, “they have the potential to create tens of thousands of new jobs in the marijuana industry,” according to the report.Putting it in perspectiveMarijuana also has been a boon to small businesses. The majority of the jobs in marijuana are concentrated on smaller operations that only need a handful of employees.Part of the reason for this is the fact marijuana remains an illegal drug at the federal level. Because legalization has happened in a state-by-state manner, large marijuana companies employing hundreds of workers have not materialized.Related: NBA Champion John Salley Talks About the ‘Seed to Sale’ Process for Cannabis BusinessBut the jobs continue to multiply. Assuming that most marijuana industry workers do not require a college degree, here are some other, similar occupations that the marijuana industry has either surpassed or approached in the number of workers:Short-order cooks (181,600)Electronics Installers and Repairers (136,100)Library Assistants (210,700)Boilermakers (17,400)Sheet metal workers (141,000)Again, the employment numbers will only grow as legal marijuana operations go into effect in new states. Moving forward on the debate about marijuana, expect politicians to start referencing the economic benefits of cannabis over long-held objections. They may find the economic bottom line on the marijuana industry is too strong to ignore. Easy Search. Quality Finds. Your partner and digital portal for the cannabis community. In just North America last year, the company generated $2.8 billion in operating income. Russia Launches First Rocket From New Spaceport at Second Attempt

first_img Reuters This story originally appeared on Reuters Rockets Free Webinar | July 31: Secrets to Running a Successful Family Business Next Article Image credit: Mikhail Svetlov | Getty Images –shares Russia launched its first rocket from a new cosmodrome on Thursday, a day after a technical glitch forced a postponement of the event in a sign of continuing crisis in the nation’s space industry. An unmanned Soyuz-2.1A rocket, carrying three satellites, roared into a clear blue sky from the launchpad at Vostochny cosmodrome in the remote Amur Region near China’s border at 0501 Moscow time (0201 GMT), state television showed. The satellites separated from the rocket’s third stage about nine minutes into the flight and headed for their designated orbits, Russian news agencies quoted officials from the space agency Roscosmos as saying. The launch was called off less than two minutes before lift-off on Wednesday, upsetting President Vladimir Putin. He had flown thousands of kilometers to watch what Russian media and officials called a historic event.”I want to congratulate you. There is something to be proud of,” Putin told cosmodrome workers and Roscosmos officials after watching Thursday’s launch at Vostochny, Russian media reported.”The equipment overreached itself a little bit yesterday,” he said. “In principle, we could have held the launch yesterday, but the equipment overdid its job and stopped the launch. This is a normal thing.”His remarks contrasted with his tough words after Wednesday’s aborted launch, when he criticized Roscosmos and government officials for the large number of technical problems in the space industry, saying that “there should be an appropriate reaction”.Putin reprimanded Roscosmos head Igor Komarov and Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, who is in charge of space and military industries, Russian news agencies quoted Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov as saying.Corruption and glitchesProblems with Russian space rockets are worrisome not just for the Kremlin but also for the U.S. space program. NASA has depended on Russia to fly its astronauts to the International Space Station since it retired its space shuttle.Delays and corruption have blighted work on the new cosmodrome. A European Space Agency launch in French Guiana, using a similar Russian Soyuz rocket, was also delayed by technical problems this month. The Soviet Union pioneered manned space flight when it fired Yuri Gagarin into space in 1961.But since the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russia’s space program has had to retrench for lack of cash. For years it filled gaps in its budget by taking paying tourists into space. The Vostochny spaceport, the first civilian rocket launch site on Russian territory, is intended to phase out Russia’s reliance on the Baikonur cosmodrome, which it leases from ex-Soviet Kazakhstan.”The main thing is that this launch pad is now working, it has been prepared well by you and it is functioning,” Putin told cosmodrome workers on Thursday. “We are now facing a second stage here, to accommodate a heavy rocket.””We have a lot of work in front of us, and it’s daunting. But beyond all doubt, this is … a very serious step forward in the development of Russia’s space exploration.”(Reporting by Dmitry Solovyov; Editing by Andrew Roche) April 28, 2016 3 min read Learn how to successfully navigate family business dynamics and build businesses that excel. FirstofitsKind Consumer Benefits Coverage Index Illustrates Benefits Spending Patterns Across US

first_imgNew Index Provides Insights and Creates a Model to Help Consumers Better Understand and Prioritize Benefits Investments Benefitfocus, Inc., a leading cloud-based benefits management platform and services provider, announced the release of the Consumer Benefits Coverage Index (“the Index”). The Index creates a model for evaluating how adequately a consumer is protected through the employer-based benefits they’ve purchased. The value of the Index lies not only in serving as a benchmark for consumers to compare their own benefits coverage to that of their peers, but also to provide greater awareness on how they could better protect themselves and their families. For its initial findings, Benefitfocus examined a representative sample of US consumers and determined that the average consumer may not be adequately protected in key areas, and that there is opportunity for additional education when it comes to benefit selection.“We provide insight for the entire benefits industry comprised of employers, brokers, carriers and product suppliers into the purchasing behavior and coverage gaps present among consumers,” said Ray August, President & CEO, Benefitfocus. “The Index processes millions of enrollment transactions from our platform and transforms them into a simple model for employers and consumers to evaluate the fitness of their benefit decisions and raise their benefits IQ.”Marketing Technology News: Evergage Appoints Laura Saati as VP of Customer Success for Evergage’s Retail PracticeCreated by Benefitfocus using its proprietary, annually recurring research (previously published in the State of Employee Benefits reports), the Index draws on anonymized, actual benefits enrollment data pulled from the BENEFITFOCUS Platform. The Index examines consumers’ spending decisions specific to voluntary benefits, defined for the purposes of the Index as those non-medical benefits offered through an employer but paid for partially or solely by the consumer. These benefits span across three product categories—health (e.g., dental, vision or health advocacy), wealth (e.g., life insurance or health spending accounts) and lifestyle (e.g., identity theft protection or pet insurance). Each benefits category in the Index is scored on a scale from 0 to 100 (with an aggregate score range of 0-300), reflecting the average spend by a consumer in these categories relative to their peer group. Scores can fall in one of three ranges that approximate optimal and sub-optimal coverage based on how similar or dissimilar an individual’s coverage is to their peer group.Marketing Technology News: DemandBlue launches DemandBlue Labs, a Salesforce Innovation Org for its Customers“Our goal is to use our massive data intelligence to drive greater awareness of the benefits purchasing habits of working Americans,” said Jennifer Clark, Director of Artificial Intelligence Strategy at Benefitfocus. “For employers, this data set may help them optimize their benefits offerings based on their employee demographics. Citation: Nissan cuts forecast in first earnings since Ghosn arrest (2019, February 12) retrieved 17 July 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2019-02-nissan-ghosn.html The firm blamed growing costs of raw materials and emerging economy foreign exchange declines for its bottom-line profit dropping by 45.2 percent to 316.7 billion yen ($2.9 billion). The disappointing nine-month performance and a change in accounting methods forced the manufacturer to downgrade its net profit forecast for the fiscal year to March to 410 billion yen, compared with 500 billion yen projected earlier.Annual sales are now seen at 11.6 trillion yen, down from an earlier estimate of 12 trillion yen.The results came as Nissan and its partners Renault and Mitsubishi Motors are seeking to turn the page on Ghosn’s arrest for financial misconduct, which has exposed a rift in the three-way tie-up.CEO Hiroto Saikawa vowed to “refine” the firm’s ties with Renault, whose new boss Jean-Dominique Senard is expected to take Ghosn’s position on the Nissan board.”This alliance is our very big strength and asset,” Saikawa told reporters after the earnings were announced. He said that the firms “respect each other’s independence” but strive for “win-win” results by maximising synergies. But Satoru Takada, an analyst at TIW, a Tokyo-based research and consulting firm, warned the alliance still has a bumpy road ahead.”Confusion surrounding Nissan’s management is expected to last a long time, as it’s not easy for the two companies to strike a deal on tough issues, including capital relations,” Takada told AFP.”It’s hard to find a manager like Ghosn who can take balanced actions,” he said. “We need to watch if the confusion will have a direct impact on its performance from now on,” he added.Brexit uncertaintyGhosn stands accused—among other things—of under-declaring some nine billion yen in salary between 2010 and 2018 and continues to languish in a Tokyo detention centre after being refused bail.Nissan said it was accounting for this under-reported salary—technically owed to Ghosn—although Saikawa said that “I personally don’t think that we will reach a conclusion to pay this money.”The Nissan results came at a tough time for Japanese carmarkers.Last week, domestic rival Toyota slashed its full-year net profit forecast after saying its nine-month figure had tumbled nearly 30 percent as it was hit by investment losses.Honda logged a net-profit fall of 34.5 percent for the nine months to December but revised up its full-year forecasts thanks to strong motorcycle sales.Toyota and Nissan have also seen their strategy affected by uncertainty over a possible British exit from the EU without a deal.Nissan has announced the cancellation of plans to build its X-Trail SUV at its plant in northeast England despite Brexit assurances from the government.Global vehicle sales for Nissan fell 2.1 percent to 4 million units for the nine-month period because of declines in North America and Europe. However, sales for the nine months came in at 8.6 trillion yen, up 0.6 percent on-year.center_img Nissan taps new Renault boss to replace Ghosn on board Crisis-hit Japanese automaker Nissan slashed its full-year forecast Tuesday as nine-month net profit dropped 45 percent in the first earnings report since the stunning arrest of former chairman Carlos Ghosn. Cyclone Gaja may spawn more weather systemsCyclone Gaja may spawn more weather

first_imgA ‘red message’ was in effect for the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coast as severe cyclone ‘Gaja’ readied to wind down as a conventional cyclone over the Pamban-Cuddalore stretch near Nagapattinam on late Thursday evening. The India Met Department (IMD) had forecast heavy to very heavy rain at a few places on the coast with extremely heavy rain at isolated places likely over the South Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coast the same day.Heavy to very heavy rain was also forecast at isolated places over North Tamil Nadu and heavy at isolated places over Kerala, Rayalaseema and South Coastal Andhra Pradesh.OutlookAs for Friday, forecasts favoured heavy rain at a few places with very heavy rain at isolated places over interior Tamil Nadu; heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places over Kerala and heavy at isolated places over South Interior Karnataka. After crossing the coast, a remnant of ‘Gaja’ could dart across the South Peninsula and set up a low-pressure area over the South-East Arabian Sea by Saturday. The IMD expected it to intensify but move away from the Kerala coast.Gale winds with speeds of up to 90 km/hr gusting to 100 km/hr were expected to buffet the central parts of the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts associated with the landfall. On Friday, winds reaching speeds of up to 40 km/hr gusting to 50 km/hr are likely over interior Tamil Nadu, along and off the Kerala coast, the Comorin, the Gulf of Mannar and the Palk straits. A similar warning is valid for the South-East Arabian Sea and along and off the Kerala coast on Saturday.Fresh action likelyIt could be ‘rough’ to ‘very rough’ (waves rising to 8-20 ft) along and off the Tamil Nadu-South Andhra Pradesh coasts while being ‘high’ (20- to 30 ft) along and off the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts from Thursday afternoon.Meanwhile, indications are that the South-West Bay off the coast of Sri Lanka and adjoining South Tamil Nadu coast would witness fresh traction between November 19 and 23, bringing a fresh round of rainfall.A weather tracker of the US National Weather Services seemed to suggest a ‘low’ popping up on the trail of erstwhile severe cyclone ‘Gaja’ over the South-Central Bay and making a move west-north-west towards Lanka-South Tamil Nadu.It has also put under watch a cyclonic circulation over the North-West Pacific and adjoining South China Sea, seeking to enter the South-East Bay and adjoining Andaman Sea to generate a likely ‘low’ later next week.  COMMENT SHARE SHARE EMAIL SHARE November 15, 2018 RELATED COMMENTS weather Cyclone update: Gaja to intensify by 3 pm Gale winds warned for central TN coasts with gusts of 100 km/h Published onlast_img read more

Collective leadership need of the hour Chandrababu Naidu

first_imgAndhra Pradesh SHARE SHARE EMAIL January 24, 2019 SHARE COMMENT Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has stressed that “collective leadership” is the need of the hour for the ‘Mahagathbandhan’ (grand alliance) of opposition parties, and said the name of the leader for the prime minister’s post would be declared after elections. Naidu, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) president, said that be it West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee or NCP chief Sharad Pawar, nobody is working single-handedly but functioning together. He came down heavily on his Telangana counterpart K Chandrasekhar Rao for skipping the Trinamool Congress’ (TMC) mega opposition rally in Kolkata on January 19, and described his absence from the event as “drama“. The absence of the BJD and Left parties at the Brigade Parade Ground national unity rally, which was participated by nearly two dozen opposition leaders, had also set tongues wagging. Naidu also made a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and dubbed him as a “publicity-seeking PM, who only raises slogans and never performs”. EVMs“There is a need of a collective leadership. Politics is for serving people. It is through politics we will form the next government. Only post elections, we will announce the name of the leader,” Naidu told PTI in an exclusive interview here on January 19. On the issue of electronic voting machines (EVMs), he said they were susceptible to “manipulation” and called for restoring the ballot paper system. Naidu said the coalition of opposition parties would soon visit the Election Commission (EC) to press for their demand to do away with EVMs and return to paper ballot. “The ‘Mahagatbandhan’ allies are planning to begin a nationwide debate on reintroducing ballot paper system for Lok Sabha elections. EVMs are not used in any other democracy,” the TDP president said. The machines pose a big “risk” as the fate of the democracy lies in the hands of a computer programmer. “Using EVMs means you are risking democracy in the hands of one individual, who is a computer operator or a programmer. No developed or technology-driven country, including the US, Japan or Germany, has allowed EVMs. Anybody can manipulate these machines,” he said.Tall promises Naidu, who had pulled out of the NDA last year over denial of special category status to Andhra Pradesh, said the common people are “annoyed” over the performance of the present dispensation. “Modi’s slogans have to match his performance. That is missing. Common people have realised that he makes tall promises without delivering them. That is why they are annoyed. Because of him, the country is suffering. Today, democracy is under threat. This never happened in the past. “All these sop announcements will be more damaging. He (Modi) might announce more (sops) on January 26. These are all panic reactions which will not help now. You (Modi) should have done all that in the past four-and-half years,” he said. On BJP’s rule at the Centre during the present term, Naidu said, “We have lost five to six years and that agonises people. You cannot bring back time.” COMMENTScenter_img AP Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu RELATED politics Congress not main player in Opposition’s show of strength: Jaitley Published onlast_img read more

Cyclone Fani leaves 12 dead in Odisha relief work underwayCyclone Fani leaves

first_imgcyclones Cyclone Fani: Flight operations resume at Kolkata, Bhubaneswar SHARE SHARE EMAIL Over ₹ 1,000 cr released for states affected by cyclone ‘Fani’: PM Modi Cyclone Fani kills 14, injures 63 in Bangladesh: report SHARE RELATED May 04, 2019center_img Published on A day after the “rarest of rare” summer cyclone Fani ravaged parts of Odisha, killing at least 12 people, a massive restoration-and-relief work was launched on war-footing on Saturday across 10,000 villages and urban areas, officials said. The extremely severe cyclonic storm, which made landfall at Puri on Friday, unleashed copious rain and windstorm that gusted up to 200 kmph, blowing away thatched roofs of houses, swamping towns and villages, before weakening and entering West Bengal, they said. Around 2,000 emergency workers, along with civil society organisations, personnel of the NDRF, the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) and one lakh officials, were engaged in the restoration work, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said in a statement, before leaving for an aerial survey of the affected areas. The death toll due to the calamity, which stood at eight on Friday, mounted to 12 with four fresh casualties reported from Mayurbhanj district, the officials said, adding that detailed information from many areas was still awaited. All the four people were killed after uprooted trees fell on them at different places in Baripada, the emergency officer of Mayurbhanj district, S K Pati, said.“This is a rarest of rare summer cyclone…. The first such to hit Odisha in 43 years and one of the three to hit the state in the last 150 years,” Patnaik said.Assurance from PMPrime Minister Narendra Modi, who, spoke to Patnaik and discussed the prevailing situation in the aftermath of Fani’s landfall, is likely to visit the affected areas either on Sunday or Monday, CMO sources said. The prime minister has assured continuous support from the Centre.“Spoke to Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik Ji and discussed the situation prevailing due to Cyclone Fani. Assured continuous support from the Central Government … The entire nation stands in solidarity with all those affected by the cyclone in different parts,” Modi said in a tweet.Extensive damageThe districts of Puri and Khurda were the worst-affected, the chief minister said, adding that Cuttack, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal and Nayagarh were also hit by the cyclone.“In Puri and parts of Khurda, where the electricity infrastructure has totally been devastated, we have the challenge of having to set up the entire electrification afresh,” Patnaik said. Though the “extremely severe” cyclone weakened into a “very severe” cyclonic storm in a few hours, it flattened houses with thatched roofs and kutcha houses, uprooted scores of trees, electric poles and mobile towers in coastal Odisha.Hundreds of engineers and technicians were working to restore power supply, the officials said.Work was on to restore road communication, thrown into disarray with thousands of uprooted trees blocking the way at innumerable places, Patnaik said.Relief and rescue operationsThe men and machinery of the NDRF, the ODRAF and the fire services swung into action and launched a massive restoration work to bring back normalcy, Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) B P Sethi said.“For me and my government, every life is precious and we have worked with that goal. I would like to thank from the bottom of my heart all the volunteers, panchayati raj institution (PRI) members, officials and staff who worked tirelessly and selflessly to get around 12 lakh people to safety,” Patnaik said.State Energy Secretary Hemanth Sharma said around 30 lakh power consumers were affected by the cyclone, which threw the electricity distribution infrastructure out of gear in most coastal districts. The restoration work was on in full swing, he added.Over 10,000 electric poles were uprooted or broken in Bhubaneswar, he said, adding that efforts were on to restore power supply in 25 per cent crucial sectors such as the airport, the railway station and hospitals.Another 25 per cent work would be completed on Sunday and efforts were on to restore complete normalcy at the earliest, Sharma said. The power network has been severely damaged in districts such as Puri, Khurda, Ganjam, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara and Balasore. The Quick Action Team (QRT) of the premier naval training establishment, INS Chilka, was immediately deployed to provide emergency assistance in cutting and clearing trees in some areas, said an official.A naval Dornier aircraft carried out an aerial survey and found extensive damage to vegetation at many places around Puri.Large-scale inundation was observed at many places, particularly in the low-lying areas between Puri and the Chilka lake, the official said. The chief minister said nearly 12 lakh people were evacuated and shifted to safer locations from about 10,000 villages and 52 urban agglomerations, 24 hours ahead of the cyclone, “probably the largest such exercise at the time of a natural calamity in the country“.The evacuees were accommodated in over 4,000 shelters, including 880 specially-designed cyclone centres, he added.
