More Zika for Grand Turk

first_imgFacebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsAppGrand Turk, TCI, January 9, 2017 –  Grand Turk sees cases of Zika virus surge as the Ministry of Health gives an update on recorded cases of the mosquito borne, sexually transmitted disease.Just days into the New Year, the public learned that there are eight new cases of Zika for the TCI, bringing the national total of on record cases to 24.   Seven of those eight cases were found in Grand Turk; the Capital and the island which hosts major cruise liners and thousands of tourists per day.  It is believed the rainy season is responsible in part for the new cases from October 14 through December 7, 2016.The ‘tip of the iceberg effect’ must be ever mindful, as Zika has the uniqueness of being asymptomatic, meaning some people do not even know that they have it, therefore the true number of cases will likely never be known in any society.Go to MagneticMediaTV.com for the tips and advice from the Ministry of Health on how to be Zika free. first_imgIn a secret move, the chairman of the J&K Liberation Front, Yasin Malik, was shifted out of the Kot Bhalwal prison to a high-security prison complex of Delhi’s Tihar Jail on Tuesday. Top intelligence sources said that only some higher rank jail officers were aware of the move. Malik was arrested after JKLF was banned by the government under the anti-terror law.”This is in accordance with a policy of zero tolerance against terrorism followed by govt,” Union Home Secretary Rajiv Guha said. Malik has been charged with the kidnapping of former Union Home Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed’s daughter, the murder of four Indian Air Force personnel and conspiring migration of Kashmiri Hindus from the valley. The Narendra Modi-led government had said that there are nearly 37 FIRs registered against Yasin Malik’s JKLF. The NIA has also registered a separate case against Malik. The NIA had brought Malik to Delhi on Tuesday evening after NIA court issued a production warrant.Who is Yasin Malik?Yasin Malik is one of the popular separatist leaders from Kashmir who has been a proponent of Azaad (independent) Kashmir since 1987 when militancy broke out in the valley. Malik was one of the few local men who crossed the Line of Control to get arms training from Pakistan occupied Kashmir. He floated JKLF which was the militant organisation that carried out many attacks against security forces in the valley. Malik was also arrested several times. But soon afterwards, he shunned the path of violence and is said to have adopted the Gandhian resistance policy. Key Kashmiri seperatist leaders Yasin Malik (L), Syed Ali Shah Geelani (C) and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq hold hands after addressing a press confrence in Srinagar on November 8, 2016.TAUSEEF MUSTAFA/AFP/Getty ImagesThe recent move of the ban on JKLF by the government had evoked condemnation from mainstream politicians like Mehbooba Mufti and others in Kashmir saying that the order was unnecessary since Malik was no longer supporting violence. However, the government reiterated that it has credible evidence of Malik funding stone pelting activities in the valley. It was also said that JKLF was engaged in promoting anti-India feelings among the people of Kashmir, which is detrimental to the country’s territorial integrity.last_img read more

City Council Getting Back To Normal

first_imgIt was a busy week for members of the Baltimore City Council. In the aftermath of the riots they could be seen during television interviews on channels from MSNBC to CNN, talking about what is next for Baltimore, how the city is holding up and what the large peaceful rallies held over the weekend meant.Councilman Brandon M. Scott, District 2, has been at the forefront of calling on members of the community to be responsible and show one another love. He is calling for City Council hearings on the safety of the police wagon fleet. His resolution calls for Anthony Batts, police commissioner, to appear before the City Council and discuss how people transported in police wagons can be kept safer. Freddie Gray, of course, was severely injured while being transported in a police wagon. The resolution was adopted by the City Council and now goes to the Police Department for their response. The other notable piece of news from last week’s City Council meeting was a resolution introduced by Bill Henry, District 4, seeking to call on Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake to increase funding for Community Schools. There are 20 Community Schools in Baltimore in each district except for District 8. Community Schools offer additional resources for students as well as the surrounding community. These resources can range from increased mental health care and help for homeless families to health screenings, among others.Community Schools currently receive $6 million in funding and the resolution calls for an increase to $10 million.last_img read more
